Warner says Va. has $324 million surplus
Governor says most of the extra cash will go to rainy-day fund

Excerpts

Even before the record $1.4 billion package of tax increases kicks in, Virginia will reap a significant $324 million surplus from last year's budget.

The Warner administration, which successfully sought the tax boosts this year during the longest-ever session of the General Assembly, disclosed yesterday the unexpected bumper crop of revenues for the fiscal period ending June 30.

and

Surplus dollars went, to among other things, the rainy-day fund ($178 million); upkeep for state buildings ($51 million); the water-quality improvement fund ($30 million); and relief for victims of Hurricane Isabel and other disasters ($26 million).

The one thing I hated about the Clintoon years was the Dems trumpeting the surplus like it was something to be proud of, when in fact, it's tantamount to highway robbery by the government. The fact that it's happening at the state level is even more appalling.

Put the blame squarely on the GOP. Yes, the Democratic Governor asked for the tax increases but the GOP delivered. Its not the Democrats who gave Virginians nearly $2 billion of tax increases.

Yeah I remember it too. A budget surplus is nothing to celebrate over. It just means the government is confiscating more of your income and reaping the spoils.

"...trumpeting the surplus like it was something to be proud of, when in fact, it's tantamount to highway robbery by the government."

If surluses are bad (highway robbery) what then are deficits - candy for the masses?

So, the government overcharged their customers 324 million dollars? A business that did that would have a lot of 'esplainin' to do.

I like a deficit that's big enough to take care of itself.

Uh, guys. ALL the states do. Each state has a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report showing revenue taken, but not used.

Well organized website: cafrman.com

It gives you practically every state.

WARNING: Be prepared to be very pi$$ed off once you find out how much of our money the bureaucrats are wallowing in!

Del. Marian Van Landingham, D-Alexandria, a senior House budget writer, chastised Republicans. "They should be grateful we have a little bit of maneuvering room to put aside a little more money and some more for the environment."

It was all for the environment. Who can complain about that?

Put the blame squarely on the GOP. Yes, the Democratic Governor asked for the tax increases but the GOP delivered.

That's not entirely correct. The RINOs in the Senate wanted more than the Governor asked for and they intimidated 17 spineless GOP traitors in the House to go along with them.

But the majority of Republicans opposed this tax increase.

Watch for how this plays out in next year's Governor's race.

Yes... Virginia Republicans have become everything they once opposed. Its sweet to rub their lack of principle in their face with a government surplus. Nice to see they took the taxpayers for a ride.

Well if it takes the GOP losing its majority to teach them the lesson going back on your principles doesn't pay you political dividends, I'm all for it. The first time they voted for a tax increase, they shouldn't be surprised if they find themselves back in the minority. PRINCIPLES MATTER, STUPID.
