ANTI-KERRY VETS HANG TOUGH
Drudge Report ^ | Fri Aug 06 2004 13:37:12 ET

Posted on 08/06/2004 10:51:08 AM PDT by Brian Mosely

The following statement from Swift Boat Veterans for Truth concerns an article appearing in morning edition of the Boston Globe:

"Viet Vet Captain George Elliott describes an article appearing in today’s edition of the Boston Globe by Mike Kranish as extremely inaccurate and highly misstating his actual views. He reaffirms his statement in the current advertisement paid for by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, Captain Elliott reaffirms his affidavit in support of that advertisement, and he reaffirms his request that he ad be played.

“Additional documentation will follow.

The article by Mr. Kranish is particularly surprising given page 102 of Mr. Kranish’s own book quoting John Kerry as acknowledging that he killed a single, wounded, fleeing Viet Cong soldier whom he was afraid would turn around.

“Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has more than 250 supporters who are revealing first hand, eyewitness accounts of numerous incidents concerning John Kerry’s military service record. The organization will continue to discuss much of what John Kerry has reported as fact concerning his four-month tour of duty in Vietnam.”

"I really hope and pray that FOXNEWS has not turned to the dark side."

If you recall the media tried to give FL to Gore in 2000
VNS was a private consortium owned by
ABC News, The Associated Press, CBS News, CNN, Fox News, and NBC.

4 of the 5 of the networks and cable newsrooms
(only ABC waited till both time zones closed)
"announced" Gore had won
BEFORE the 2nd time zone in FL had closed.
This cost President Bush votes in the FL panhandle.

I was at a friends house and the State of FL election website results showed President Bush was winning

In fact, the networks which called Florida for Gore did so early in the evening—before polls had even closed in the Florida panhandle, which is part of the Central Time Zone. NBC called Florida for Gore at 7:49:40 p.m., Eastern Time. This was 10 minutes before polls closed in the Florida panhandle. Thirty seconds later, CBS called Florida for Gore. And at 7:52 p.m., Fox called Florida for Gore. Moore never lets the audience know that Fox was among the networks which made the error of calling Florida for Gore prematurely. Then at 8:02 p.m., ABC called Florida for Gore. Only ABC had waited until the Florida polls were closed.

About an hour before the polls closed in panhandle Florida,
the networks called the U.S. Senate race in favor of the Democratic candidate.

The premature calls may have cost Bush thousands of votes from the conservative panhandle, as discouraged last-minute voters heard that their state had already been decided;
some last-minute voters on their way to the polling place turned around and went home. Other voters who were waiting in line left the polling place. In Florida, as elsewhere, voters who have arrived at the polling place before closing time often end up voting after closing time, because of long lines. The conventional wisdom of politics is that supporters of the losing candidate are most likely to give up on voting when they hear that their side has already lost. Thus, on election night 1980, when incumbent President Jimmy Carter gave a concession speech while polls were still open on the west coast, the early concession was blamed for costing the Democrats several Congressional seats in the West, such as that of 20-year incumbent James Corman. The fact that all the networks had declared Reagan a landslide winner while west coast voting was still in progress was also blamed for Democratic losses in the West; Congress even held hearings about prohibiting the disclosure of exit polls before voting had ended in the any of the 48 contiguous states.

Even if the premature television calls affected all potential voters equally, the effect was to reduce Republican votes significantly, because the Florida panhandle is a Republican stronghold. Most of Central Time Zone Florida is in the 1st Congressional District, which is known as the "Redneck Riviera." In that district, Bob Dole beat Bill Clinton by 69,000 votes in 1996, even though Clinton won the state by 300,000 votes.

So depress overall turnout in the panhandle,
and you will necessarily depress more Republican than Democratic votes.

A 2001 study by John Lott suggested that the early calls cost Bush at least 7,500 votes,
and perhaps many more.

At 10:00 p.m., which network took the lead in retracting the premature Florida win for Gore?
The first retracting network was CBS, not Fox.

Over four hours later, at 2:16 a.m., Fox projected Bush as the Florida winner,
as did all the other networks by 2:20 a.m.

At 3:59 a.m., CBS took the lead in retracting the Florida call for Bush. All the other networks, including Fox, followed the CBS lead within eight minutes. That the networks arrived at similar conclusions within a short period of time is not surprising, since they were all using the same data from the Voter News Service. (Linda Mason, Kathleen Francovic & Kathleen Hall Jamieson, “CBS News Coverage of Election Night 2000: Investigation, Analysis, Recommendations” (CBS News, Jan. 2001), pp. 12-25.)

The big 5 media TV and Cable newsrooms are the real threat to the 2004 election.

..."Early on Tuesday, November 7th 2000, TV stations and various media based in Florida reported that Gore has won Florida which was a big surprise for everyone because of strong republican support. Bush's brother Jeb is governor there and Florida usually gives support to the Republicans. Some of them questioned that and during the night CNN showed 52% Bush's lead over 46% for Gore. It is almost impossible to believe that media could have been that blind and biased to report Gore's victory."...

I thought Kerry commanded his own boat, just like JFK.

Two of them, after the CO in the first unit couldn't put up with him.

I didn't realize that swiftboats work in groups while patrolling

They didn't much when they were working offshore interdiction, once they went into the rivers and after the VC, the worked in groups. Just like PT boats usually did in WW-II. (For fictional versions of PT boat operations, see PT-109, "In Harms Way" and "They Were Expendable" (that last two with a real John, Wayne that is)

But they are treading awful close to liable. They, the vets, are not public figures as Kerry is.

Only in the '80's did Viet Nam vets suddenly become a part of pop culture and "acceptable".

Which not so very coincidently corresponds to the two terms of Ronald W. Reagan. He helped make the military and vets proud and the people proud of them once again.

Make that '90's...typing too fast

Actually I'd say it started in the 80s. I was on active duty, and in the Reserve and Guard from '73 to '78. Then I had a break in service until early '83, when I went back into the reserves. All except one Guard year was on regular AF bases. The difference was something you could feel and see. The esprite was back. There was still lots of bitterness among some of those who went through the '70s, but morale was generally pretty good, much better than before.

"I look forward to hearing from any of you out there in FReeperland."
===

"Whatever the reason, it is really kicking me in the gut. I am totally stressed out about this. I am so g**damn angry at Kerry, I wanna get in my truck and follow the traitor around and scream at the top of my lungs,TRAITOR! at him at every stop he makes.

My blood is boiling and it's gonna be another sleepless night. I know there are many guys feeling the same... or am I alone in this outrage??"
====

Hey, you're not alone one bit! I feel like trashing something too!

My blood is boiling too, and has been for a few days. You know what I did? Turned off the TV. Internet news is enough; and still ticks me off!

Don't go out in your truck tonight, ok? Won't help any.

I hope you don't have a sleepless night, but I understand if you do. I've lived with a VN vet for quite a few years. You know the old saying "sleep tight" right? Well, I say to you like I say to him every night! "sleep loose!" As in relaxed.........

Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," has already reached number one on the bestseller list on Amazon.com, based on advance orders

But I'll bet it will be displayed on the back shelves, or with only 1 copy visible. Even now if you go to a bookstore, you see 3 or 4 "fronts" of the Impeached One. (Of course the copies are also making their way rather quickly to the "outlets" of the big chains, when they can't be sold in the main stores. :) )

A lot of mock indignation at how low the Pubbies are sinking and I double-barrel 'em with the "It ain't Pubbies, it's Kerry's fellow sailors" and "It's about damned time the GOP fought back!!" Then, they slink away...actually, on LP.org they've got a "Bozo" feature in which you can ignore other posters ping if you add them to your "Bozo" list. I think more and more Lefties are Bozoing me...LOL!!

Thanks for the kind words. I went for long walk with my dog after I watched President Bush on Roland Martin's fishing show. He had his dog, Barney, with him and they looked like they had fun. When the show finished, I looked at my dog and said, "Wanna go for walk?" and she jumped up and danced around, so off we went! It helped a lot. I am gonna do it every day when I get all spooled up.

I sure hope I can get close enough to Hanoi John Kerry when he comes to Florida again so I can scream at him with my bullhorn. I know that will do my psyche a lot of good too!

I was at the GOP victory party for Clay county at the Orange Park Holiday Inn. I distictly remember the networks calling Florida right after 7:00 PM, maybe 7:15PM. We were all in shock because we knew the panhandle polls were still open for 45 more minutes. I stayed around for 10 inutes and had to leave as I was absolutely sick to my stomach. It was clear the networks were trying to throw the election for Gore.

My point is that it was called much earlier than the times you mentioned. I know, I was home by 7:30 and throwing up in my own bathroom.

Sleep loose to all you veterans.

These guys must have realized that they would come under incessant attack from the sKerry campaign, as well as the lamestream media. I trust they are prepared for that, and hope they fight for the truth as they know it.

God bless.
