Bush to announce US troop pullouts from Europe, Asia on Monday: report -

LONDON Aug 14, 2004 The United States is expected to announce Monday that it is pulling 100,000 troops out of Europe and Asia, the Financial Times newspaper reported Saturday. It said the withdrawals -- the largest restructuring of Washington's military presence abroad since World War II -- would be announced in a speech by US President George W. Bush.

Citing "people briefed on the plan" in a front-page story datelined London, the newspaper said two-thirds of the reductions would be in Europe, with 70,000 troops -- mostly from Germany -- being sent back to stateside bases.

"In Asia, the drawdown is expected to include the 3,500-soldier brigade from South Korea, recently deployed in Iraq, but will also include scaling down presences in several other countries in the region," it said.

Germany will still host the largest contingent of US troops in Europe, but the pullouts could nevertheless see the departure of the 1st Armoured Division and the 1st Infantry Division, the Financial Times said.

A "pull out" or possibly a "relocation"?

I would imagine a bit of both. Perhaps he's strengthening our military by not spreading them to (ungrateful) areas that they are no longer needed.

Nice way to say f-you to Germany. I am concerned about some of the withdrawn troops being from Asia, though, with N. Korea and all that.

And this is a direct message to Germany...

American bases provide a huge source of income wherever they are located.

Germany is going to lose more money over this than they ever made from helping scam the Iraqi people in the Oil for Food program.

With most of the focus on the "no longer needed" I would presume.

However the (ungrateful) certainly could be a lesser factor in the decision.

It's a relocation......really, not a pullout. Pullout is what Kerry is planning to do for those newly liberated folks in Iraq. Pullout or cut and run.......same deal.

My son was stationed in Germany for four years. This pullout from Germany has been long in the works. Ramstein will remain as will a few other select bases. Some will be relocated to Poland.

All those burgomeisters who were wringing their hands a year or so ago should have never let their national politicians get so out of hand.

Heads will roll over this as reality bites.

It will be a huge blow to Germany, which is already in a financial mess, with huge unemployment numbers. GI's spend lots of money in the countries in which they are stationed, and Germany, in particular, will feel the loss.

I think this is great--it shows those ungrateful wretches that there is a price to be paid for disloyalty to the people who saved their rears in WWII, and through the years since the war ended.
