Kerry's daughter wins scholarship to study in London
The Daily Telegraph ^ | August 16, 2004 | David Rennie

The youngest daughter of John Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate, has won a scholarship to study in London next year, her father told reporters at the weekend.

Vanessa Kerry, 27, a student at Harvard Medical School, will study for a master's degree in health and economics from the London School of Economics and the London School of Tropical Medicine.

Miss Kerry has forged a second career as a star of the presidential election campaign.

She was sent on the road to tell affectionate and often gently mocking anecdotes about her "warm" and "goofy" father as part of a concerted effort to shed Mr Kerry's image as a stiff patrician.

With her sister Alex, 30, she introduced her father's keynote acceptance speech at last month's Democratic National Convention by joking about his bouffant hairstyle and talking about a present that Mr Kerry had made for his dying mother.

Competition for the Fulbright scholarship, a government-funded grant programme limited to 1,000 US students a year, is fierce.

Miss Kerry has said she was inspired to seek a career in global health by a visit she made to Vietnam in 1991 with her father.

After pre-medical studies at Yale, she studied infectious diseases at Harvard, spending time in Ghana immunising children.

"Goofy", I believe. It appears to be a congenital condition in her family to harp on and on and on about Vietnam.

Regards, Ivan

Miss Kerry has forged a second career as a star of the presidential election campaign.

Hmm. She can't get a genuine career, she has to forge one?

Someone please tell this brown-nosing reporter that being "star of the presidential election campaign" does not make a "career".

Who is on this board that gives out these scholarships

I still can't believe she applied for this federal funded scholarship when her father is married to a BILLIONAIRE and her Mother is worth 300 Million

I remember the olden days when scholarships were based on financial need, not political handouts.

Nice of her to take a scholarship from "the poor" when the family can clearly afford the tuition.

Good for her. Her folks are pretty strapped for cash, I hear. Her dad apparently had to get a second mortgage on one of his mansions in order to appear "needy" for his campaign. Talk about hard times in this Bush economy...

Maybe she wore her see-through blouse again. That might have helped.

Didn't Senator Fullbright chair the Senate hearings that Kerry testified at when he called our soldiers baby-killers?

LOL.

The Bush economy must be worse than I thought. Billionaire daughters need scholarships for college. I even read that Hussein is now unemployed.

Funny how average rich kids end up pre med at Harvard, but middle class smart kids are lucky to get into State U.

my cousin was also a Fulbright Scholar from maybe five years back. She too was at Harvard, and did immunization projects in rural China. I guess the Fulbright people like such background :)

It's really not a traditional "scholarship" per se in the sense you apply it to pay for certain school expenses, and it's certainly not based on financial needs at all.

It's more like an extremely competitive Fellowship award given out to ... well, hard to say ... oh, someone like Mireya Mayor, Fulbright scholar, PhD primatologist, Miami Dolphines cheerleader, comes to mind as the sort of bright, well educated, accomplished graduate student with an interesting background that they tend to favor :)

uhh, Fulbright is not awarded for financial needs at all. Whether the receipent is wealthy or not is not part of the equation.
