Friends over there are very worried. Kuchma's hand-picked successor - Viktor Yanukovich - is doing the same nasty election politics that Kuchma pulled. Yushchenko seems to be semi-clean, which for Ukraine is close to sainthood.

A friend who was held six months in "protective custody" for backing the wrong side in Zaporozh'e city politics thinks it's going to be a revolution, but I think the people are too pessimistic and worn-out to bother.

KUCHMA TELLS RUMSFELD UKRAINE'S STANCE ON EU,
NATO, US TIES REMAIN UNCHANGED

TV 5 Kanal, Kiev, Ukraine, in Ukrainian, 13 Aug 04
BBC Monitoring Service, UK, in English, Friday, Aug 13, 2004

KIEV - [Presenter] [Ukrainian] President [Leonid] Kuchma has confirmed that the country's course towards European and Euro- Atlantic integration and its position on strategic partnership with the USA remain unchanged. He promised this to [visiting] US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in Crimea. Rumsfeld met with Ukrainian Defence Minister [Yevhen] Marchuk.

[Passage omitted: Rumsfeld outlines "two compulsory components" for security in Iraq.] The two ministers agreed that the length of the Ukrainian peacekeepers' deployment in Iraq depended on the situation in that country. [Marchuk] To a significant extend - I have already spoken about this - [this] will depend on how quickly the Iraqi security forces are able to take the situation in their country under control.
