Grassboots.Org - With Both Boots on the Ground And Its Head on Right - We Could Use Some Help!

Distributing Flyers

Why? - Because this may be the only way to reach folks who rely on the "mainstream" media for their news (CBS, NY Times, AP Wire, etc.). These flyers are simple and are more likely to be read than glossy ones (people will appreciate the local feel to them) and they resemble pizza flyers. Flyering will be the only means to counter any October Surprises the Democrats might launch. We will have flyers on any such contingency available immediately on the home page. We experienced wonderful results with this approach in 1994 opposing a pro-abortion candidate.

I'm a legislative-district precinct chairman for the GOP
in California.

Two suggestions: One, knock on the door so that people
will actually see you. It gives your literature more
credibility. Many people will be supportive, and if so,
they'll be happy to see somebody doing this. You can have conversations that prepare THEM to have more effective
conversations with people they know. It also boosts morale.

Two, get precinct lists from your county registrar of voters if you haven't already. If you're in a state with party registration, these should tell you which voters are GOP, Dem, and independent. When I was precinct-walking for our gubernatorial candidate in 2002, I went to every home that had either a Republican or an independent.

Many Americans live in a household with someone who is not of their party. If the Republicans in these households can convince enough of the Democrats and independents in them, we can not only win but win big!

Thanks for the wonderful help. We do intend to do some knocking once we get a little more help and after the Bush Signs are up in the yards.

Are there any problems in getting precinct lists?

We have distributors in three places in Iowa and one in Ohio. We are trying not to "Despise the day of small things". We hope to take Iowa for the Pres and really get ready for 2008.

About problems getting precinct lists, I don't know.
It would depend on the state law. Ask someone you know
in the GOP structure how it's done.

Is the point of waiting for the Bush signs to see who
supports Bush? Those would be committed GOP voters. I'd
focus above all on people who you don't know are
committed to W. Also, many strong Bush supporters won't
have lawn signs for one reason or another.

Do I wait for them to read the flyer? Do you recommend just starting a conversation? We have also done some informal polling and had some good conversations that way, too.

I'd play it by ear -- or rather, ear and eye.

After just a little bit of experience, your
volunteers should be able to tell quickly
who is supportive or interested, who is opposed,
and who is apathetic and doesn't want to hear it.

For the latter two groups, just give them the
flier and point out that someone else in the
household might be interested. For the first
group, yes, try to start a conversation. Just don't
let it go too long. Short conversations are one
of the best forms of precinct work. Long ones, unless
they're with an influential person or someone who
has a good chance of becoming an asset to your efforts,
can waste lots of time.

I just had a very rewarding visit to your website!! I think your idea of printing out and distributing flyers is a really good one and, better yet, something anyone with computer paper can handle. I'm going to print some off and distribute to my neighborhood. I think I'll also print some off and keep them in the car (with hubby's "Viet Vets Against Kerry" bumper stickers) to hand out whenever I get the chance. Thanks for the great idea!

For those who aren't home, the best spot for a flier
is in a screen door, between the screen and the metal.
If there is such a door and such a space, this is a
spot that's both prominent and snug. It won't come out
if the door is opened from inside. The flier won't
go anywhere and will be seen easily.

Next best is in the door frame between the door (or the rubber) and the wood. Another possibility is bending the flier into an arch and placing it between the doorknob and
the frame.

What I would not do is place the flier on the ground.
One, it is too easy for people to ignore, or throw away.
Two, I think it's disrespectful to make people bend over
for something ... especially when it was unsolicited.

Bless You! Bless You!

Please keep us posted as to how many you distribute - our goal is 543,895.

(Does anybody know what that number represents?). Also what towns you passed them out and which flyers. We will be adding two or three new ones each week and would even take suggestions!

Nope - The margin of popular votes that Al Gore allegedly won by over President Bush in 2000. We want to win both electoral and popular votes this time, even if it isn't necessary.
