Actually, he said the people around him figured him out pretty fast. They just wanted him gone.
The people who processed the paperwork were the ones who never expected a naval officer to lie.

If he had been in Nam for his full tour, he probably would have been caught falsifying reports. In such a short time span of 3 months, no one caught on to his pattern of lies.
