CNN spinning negative on GOP convention, costing New York millions

Posted on 08/26/2004 4:20:35 AM PDT by tdadams

Watching CNN Headline News this morning, I was treated to another dose of CNN's unmitigated bias and hypocrisy.

In a five minute story (a lot for Headline News), they expounded how much the Republican National Convention was going cost New York City.

One after another, we saw a couple of shopkeepers complain that with all the security, it would keep their regular customers away, costing them money. We saw man-on-the-street taxpayers complaining that all the extra overtime for the police force would cost the city millions.

Basically, how inconsiderate of the GOP to so inconvenience the people of New York with this convention.

Now, if you're asking yourself "Don't cities usually compete to get convention business, especially a nationally televised convention", you're right.

Boston, which hosted this year's Democratic convention in which John Kerry was nomitated as his party's presidential candidate, went to great lengths touting the figure of $150 million, which is what the Democratic convention was said to be bringing to the city.

CNN, of course, obligingly aired positive news segments conveying this figure and touting what a wonderful thing it is for these Democrats to be gracing the city of Boston with their presense and their dollars. Columnist Jeff Jacoby seemed to be the lone voice in the wilderness, pointing out that a convention isn't all profit and no expense, as Democrats and the major media seemed to be implying.

I guess when it comes to CNN, Democrat conventions bring in hundreds of millions of dollars to a city that embraces and welcomes it, while GOP conventions only cost a city hundreds of millions and inconveniences the residents and shopkeepers.

Nope, no bias there.

If NY didn't want the GOP convention, they could have just said "No."

but Repubs will actually SPEND money in NY, where I understand the Dems were a little tight (continuing their long honored tradition of trying to spend someone else's money!!!)

NYC might make money on this one. If all those protestors show up, they have to eat somewhere, and hopefully not all of them will be being fed by the city in the jail.(end/sarcasm).

I saw a few stories on CNN about Boston merchants worrying, but it was muted. Look for the M.S.M. not to be muted on New York city because after all, it is their liberal town. After all their Senator is Hillary Clinton and they will have to defend it.

Maybe Bill will show up with Monika and protest President Bush. You know one intern deserves another :)"

The expected disruptions which security must address is what costs so much. The trade-off is the free publicity a city gets from such events as this. It is so clearly hypocritical for CNN to mention this that it insults the intelligence of anyone who care to think about it. According to an article published on Monday, August 23, 2004, at WorldNetDaily.com, The Ruckus Society, an anarchist group planning disruptions in NYC next week, is receiving support from the Ted Turner Foundation (CNN Founder and Jane Fonda's ex) and from the Tides Foundation, which receives huge support from Teresa Heinz Kerry. A quote from this article states, "The Ruckus Society seems to have no compunction about breaking laws when they become inconvenient to 'the cause'. John Sellers himself (the founder) has been arrested over 40 times, most notably outside the 2000 Republican National Convention, where he was held on a $1 million bond until the event had concluded. While radicals claim that Sellers was railroaded by law enforcement, it's worth noting that police officers confiscated a variety of weapons from protesters at the scene of Sellers' arrest, including piano wire and gasoline-soaked rags tied to chains." The entire article can be read at http://worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=40091 It seems to me that the "home-grown" terrorist, supported by people like Turner and Heinz are a tremendous threat to a free people. It is so sad that the ultra-rich so often lose sight of the common values which hold society together. Why on earth would people like this align themselves with people like John Sellers and The Ruckus Society? For CNN to be concerned over the cost of security in NYC which has to be taken, partly due to the support of disruption coming from their own is so despicable, I cannot allow myself to think about it. This nation has one common goal which usually ties people together..SECURITY..Could anyone have imagined the sleazy politics of today a week after Sept. 11? It is so hard not to print out the ugly terms which run through my head when I think of the harm these people are doing to the future of this nation's children.

You chose not to pay attention.

I expect FR to be bloated with threads from every little agenda tool (MSM reporter/ette) slinging mud towards the convention, come next week.

I also expect the Days Of Rage II.

"You chose not to pay attention."

Wrong, I did pay attention. That's why I saw lots of coverage about the economic impact on Boston related to the DNC. It's for the same reasons that NYC will take a hit - increased security post 911. I saw coverage in the WSJ, Economist, WashPo, NYTimes, WashTimes, Time, CNN, FNC...
