Photo Essay: BBC's 10 Photos of NYC Anti-Bush Protesters
BBC On Line ^

Posted on 08/29/2004 7:14:33 PM PDT by yankeedame

"Tens of thousands gathered in New York on Sunday to protest at the policies of US President George W Bush."

Police kept an eagle eye on the protests, which took place on the eve of the Republican Party convention, due to start in New York on Monday.

Marchers mocked the Bush administration using colourful props of the kind normally seen at carnivals.

A giant dragon was set alight on the streets of the city that suffered most from the 9/11 attacks.

Many who marched said they were expressing their opposition to President Bush rather than support for his Democratic rival, John Kerry.

Countless campaigns converged for the day to protest against the government's stance on issues as varied as abortion, foreign policy and civil liberties.

Police say they made about 300 arrests during a protest that, organisers say, attracted more than 250,000 people.

Observers said the gathering in places resembled the demonstrations against the Vietnam war that rocked the US in the last century.

Roughly 1,000 flag-draped caskets were carried through the streets: A symbol of the US dead from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Some placards were more poignant than others. Here, a slain soldier is remembered by his relatives.

But I thought it was 100s of 1000s! Guess it depends on who counts.

I thought it was interesting that many protesters said they were protesting against President Bush, but not "for" JK.

Where were these protesters when Saddam was killing hundreds of thousands of his people, torturing and imprisoning millions of his people, and completely denying any of them any civile rights whatsoever? Yes, people have died in order to overturn this thugocracy, and we grieve for every innocent life, particularly those of our real American heroes (i.e., not John Kerry.) But the ends justify the means. A free, stable Iraq is a difficult but necessary step in the war on terror.

Anybody who saw this on C-SPAN saw a gathering of socialist, communist, anarchist and other freaks. Too bad the whole country could not be treated to this spectacle....

A stinkbomb would have been redundant. So would chemical weapons most likely, for the same reason.

Judging by the voter registration scandal, every Democrat believes they should be counted twice.

Iraq Veterans Against the War

Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is a group of veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. We are committed to saving lives and ending the violence in Iraq by an immediate withdrawal of all occupying forces. We also believe that the governments that sponsored these wars are indebted to the men and women that were forced to fight them and must give their Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, and Airmen the benefits that are owed to them upon their return home.

It did.

It will not look well for Kerry when his VVAW days are laid out for the American people in the coming days and they see he is one with what took place today.
