New York (CNSNews.com) - U.S. Rep. Major Owens, a New York Democrat, warned a crowd of feminist protesters that the Bush administration is taking America "into a snake pit of fascism."
Owens also said the Bush administration "spits on democracy" and is leading the country down a path reminiscent of "Nazi Germany."
Owens made his remarks in New York City's Central Park at a National Organization of Women rally on Wednesday night.
Owens, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, said the nation is at a "pivotal point" in its history, and he called the upcoming election the most important one in the last 50 years.
"I am right on the spot there in Washington, and I tell you our country will either go forward or down the drain into a snake pit of fascism," Owens declared to loud cheers from a crowd numbering about a thousand people.
"We need to stand up and fight," he said.
Immediately following his speech at the NOW event, CNSNews.com asked Owens who he blamed for America's alleged descent into fascism.
"George Bush, [Attorney General] John Ashcroft , [Vice President] Dick Cheney, the Halliburton firms," Owens responded. "We are going in the same direction as Nazi Germany in terms of we have a ruthless group of people who make bold decisions. They spit on democracy," Owens said.
Owens said the Bush administration is fascist because it "has contempt for democracy and uses power -- military power, money power, all power -- to override the wishes of those who are governed."
According to Owens, the only way to prevent the encroaching fascism is to defeat Bush.
"We have to be fanatics for peace and fanatics for democracy because we are facing people who steal elections, and they will do even more, if necessary, to retain their power," he said.
Owens believes that if President Bush is reelected, it will happen because of voter confusion -- because the voters allowed themselves to "hoodwinked" and "swindled."
"[The Bush administration is] bringing tremendous sums of money and power to bear on our media systems, our communication system, and they are going to force people to vote -- put people into a state of confusion where they vote against their own interests," Owens said.
"As they say on the streets, they have put one over on us in the worst way," Owens added.
"The country as we know it cannot survive another Bush administration," he added.

I sincerely hope he's right. If all it takes is four more years of W to end what my country has become in the last 60 years and return it to it's roots then this is the most important election ever.
Somebody should ask Owens to define fascism.

Oh, yes, Major Owens. The guy that alleged that Atlantic Ocean sharks' feeding habits were forever altered by the dumping of dead African slaves on America-bound ships hundreds of years ago.
Treason? Yes. One more "catastrophic success" by Republicans in a presidential election, and the Left will start committing domestic terrorism as a matter of policy.
