Two Men Fatally Shot Before College Football Game in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Two young men - one a Marine Corps officer - were shot to death Saturday at a tailgate party before a college football game, and authorities were searching for two suspects.

Witnesses said a fistfight preceded the shootings. One victim was dead at the scene; the other died at a hospital. Neither was a student at the university.

The victims, identified as Kevin M. McCann, 23, of Chicago, and 2nd Lt. Brett Johnson Harman, 23, of Park Ridge, Ill., were tailgating before North Carolina State University's season-opening football game against Richmond.

A witness, Brian Smith, 31, said the men had been tossing a football when a car drove recklessly in a parking lot packed with football fans. He said the men pulled the blond-haired driver from his car and beat him, pushing his head into the dirt.

The blond man left in his car, shouting curses and threatening revenge, Smith said. He returned later and asked Smith where to find the men who had beaten him, saying he had "a .38 Smith & Wesson for them."

Smith, who said the man appeared intoxicated, pointed in the direction of the victims and heard gunshots a short time later.

Smith ran to the shooting scene and found one victim wounded in the face, the other in the upper torso.

"My reaction is that I got two guys killed," Smith said.

The second suspect drove the gunman from the scene, Smith said.

"I saw the two guys, and they weren't sprinting out of there. They were all nonchalant jogging out of there," said another witness, Jason Seaton.

Seaton, 32, said he , found the two victims on the ground and used two of his shirts to try to stop the bleeding. But it was too late for one of them.

"I saw him gasp three times, and he was dead." Seaton said. "When I get out of here, when nobody's looking, I'm gonna cry about this."

Investigators said they were searching for two brothers who were wanted for questioning. They were N.C. State student Timothy Wayne Johnson, 22, and Tony Harrell Johnson, 20. Each of the men had addresses in Raleigh and Tarboro.

He shouldn't have pointed out to a drunk guy with a gun where those guys were. He knows that now.

This is sad if true. Being an AP story who knows if it happened or not.

Oh, it's likely that it happened. The details are probably wrong, though.

He should of known before he pointed the guys out! These brothers better hope the police find them first. Just like a coward to go get a gun, because he can't stand up for himself like man. The sad part of todays society.

Brothers Sought In Double Fatal Shooting Outside NCSU Football Game
Two Illinois Men Shot At Tailgating Party

POSTED: 7:23 pm EDT September 4, 2004
UPDATED: 12:13 am EDT September 5, 2004

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Officials are looking for two brothers in the shooting deaths of two men from Illinois, including a Marine, at a tailgating party across from Carter-Finley Stadium Saturday evening.

The shooting happened in a parking lot at Trinity Road and Youth Center Drive at about 6:20 p.m.

Kevin McCann, 23, of Chicago, Ill., died at the scene. 2nd Lt. Brett Harmon, 23, of Park Ridge, Ill., died at WakeMed.

One victim was shot in the head, the other in the neck according to authorities. Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison said neither were N.C. State students.

Authorities are looking for Timothy Johnson, 22, a student at N.C. State, and his brother, Tony, 20. The brothers have Raleigh and Tarboro addresses. They are considered armed and dangerous.

The brothers were last seen in a dark green Chrysler Cirrus with North Carolina license RSJ-7522. The car has damage to its right front fender and is registered to a Tarboro address.

Authorities are trying to determine if a fight led to the shooting.

Witnesses, including Tommy Rodwell, said a fight took place about an hour before the shooting.

"We were standing there and this girl came up. She was covered, splattered by blood because their friend had just been shot," Samantha Mitchell said.

The shooting happened after the North Carolina State Wolfpack kicked off its season home opener against the Richmond Spiders.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Wake County Sheriff's Office at (919) 856-6800.

The blonde man left in his car....
Yes, if the perp had been a black man no mention of skin or hair color would have been tolerated by the press. Sensitivity to the minorities must be observed, especially by the AP.

With all the laws banning guns from school property, how could something like this happen?

I quit drinking 14 years ago after a DUI accident that escaped any serious injury, but easily could have killed 3 people. I don't mind others drinking, that's their business.

The problem is that it affects innocents when those who consume it excessively, (as I once did), get near a car or a gun.

It's a waste of humanity, that could have been avoided. No one there at that situation can justify what happened and everyone lost something, the victims, the perps, bystanders as well as the US Marine Corps. There was LOTS of money put in to training a new officer and now he's dead.

I still go to football games but my head is clear and I avoid the drunks and get this: I HAVE FUN!
