OLYMPIA - A letter rigged to ignite when opened was sent to Gov. Gary Locke, but the State Patrol intercepted it and opened it safely on Thursday.
It was one of at least four such letters sent to Western and Midwestern governors. All appeared to come from a maximum security prison in Nevada.
Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Nelsa Brodie said the envelope contained two matches and a piece of paper, arranged so the matches would strike and ignite the paper.
The letter was brought to security officers at the Capitol, Brodie said, and they opened it in a way so the paper did not catch fire. The FBI is investigating, she said.
Similar letters were received by the governors' offices of Montana, Nebraska and Idaho. There were no reports of injuries.
This is pretty scary, this escalation from paper cuts up to matches.
Flaming love letter from McGreevey?
Variation on the anthrax letters of a 2001?
Those were sent to various Senators, primarily.
ping
Shouldn't that read: maximum NON-security prison?
Given that this man has royally screwed the citizens of WA, someone beat me to it. I have to admit that it wasn't me but I can certainly visualize it.
Watch them try to pin it on Dino Rossi.
Just so everyone knows: Locke is NOT running for re-election, and he's actually been pretty good to conservatives lately, compromising on the budget last year with no tax increases. Any attempt to pin this on a right-wing nut are flat out false. That said, I assure you the papers in the People's Republic of Seattle will try to do such.
Yah, and Clinton recieved fake anthrax. Give that man a lie detector test.
Unabomber Ted Kaczysnki? But he's in a Colorado prison? Maybe he was relocated?
What a clumsy assassination attempt.
Why not just mail a razor and tell the recipient to do himself in?
The prisoner got his hands on two matches. Nope, I'm not worried.
"All appeared to come from a maximum security prison in Nevada."
Appears as though "rehabilitation" is going to be a hard sell for at least one convict in Nevada.
What? LOL! I can't imagine the ten-twenty big failures of security (obtain materials & explosives, get tools, build device, mail it, mail it to a governor...) that would have to occur for this to happen. Oh ... my ... goodness. If I ever want to commit a crime, I think I'll go to Nevada. Crime - hey, it happens.
Me thinks they doth protest too much.
Its probably that idiot who's always trying to get ballot initiatives passed. That guy is f--ked up.
