The last refuge of a leftist
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Thursday, September 9, 2004 | Jack Markowitz

As a businessperson, shareholder or citizen, you probably favor low taxes, smaller rather than larger government, traditional families and a strong defense. You may even think such views are common-sense and rooted in life experience.

Wrong, says a magazine editor who personifies liberalism until it hurts -- both him and his organization. He sees Americans as so bamboozled by ideas from the right, financed by "ultraconservative millionaires," that we've been softened to brainlessness. Never mind the liberalbias that oozes from campuses, movies and mainstream media. It's conservatism that leads us lambs astray, says Lewis H. Lapham.

The editor of Harper's sees all around him conservative notions like free enterprise, tax cuts and the war on terrorism actually appealing to people. He's got to get to the bottom of this. And he does! It's a plot by conservative foundations.

'Closed-mindedness looks sadly like the last refuge of a leftist.'

And representing this last refuge we have Kucinich and the other 58 democrat members of Congress that belong to the Democrat Socialist Party, USA.

One can always enter 'Kucinich' as a 'write-in' candidate in the upcoming election. No really, democrats. Please, I insist. You'll feel like your combating all that Capitalism around you. Go ahead. Your last refuge. Vote Kucinich.

This just in: Lewis H. Lapham is a jerk. Let me enumerate the ways.

Try and get a look at some antique Harpers, I've got one my brother bought. See how Anti-Catholic they were back in the day, I'm talking late 1800s.

I say they're commies and I say the hell with 'em.

Look at the array of groups who are intent on electing John Kerry, and many of the questions about the ferocity of the Mainstream Media's efforts can be put into context.

The long-term goals of worldwide socialism and communism have not, as many believe, been put away! The long-term goals of groups within America to eliminate every acknowledgment of God from the public square (ACLU, Peole For the American Way, etc., etc.), and to transform the society in ways the Founders would not recognize as conducive to liberty--none of these goals have been realized.

And the array of powerful forces that are intent on electing John Kerry, their hero, fear that their aim of naming Supreme Court justices and continuing the assault by activist judges will be threatened by another Bush term.

Why are we surprised at the viciousness of the attacks and the willingness of people and organizations to do what is now being done?

Kucinich reminds me of one of those film noir characters that come out of the alley in a trenchcoat with some wild eyed story about how "they're out there." The guy is definitely cracked.

To leftists, nobody with an opposing viewpoint to liberal orthodoxy can have a mind of their own. Why we conservatives are all nothing but "mind-numbed"robots. The conceit and arrogance of liberals never fails to amaze me.

That's why the 'cracks' are attracted to Kucinich.

Lapham diagnoses that "ultraconservative millionaires became bent on rescuing the country from the hideous grasp of satanic liberalism."

Well....although it's not what he meant...the principle is sound.
