Bush to court 'NASCAR dads' at race in N.H.
Portland Press Herald ^ | 9-16-04 | BETH QUIMBY, Portland Press Herald Writer

Steven Prescott is an ardent auto racing fan. He's a conservative Republican and a lifelong resident of rural areas.

This weekend, the 36-year-old father of two plans to be in the stands to watch Nextel Cup stock car racing at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, N.H.

He is exactly the type of person President Bush hopes to rally during a campaign stop at Sunday's race, the largest sporting event in New England, with more than 100,000 fans expected to attend.

Prescott, who lives in Manchester, epitomizes the so-called "NASCAR dad" - the demographic buzzword given to voters who some political analysts say are important to Bush's re-election.

While the last presidential race was said to hinge on so-called soccer moms, analysts say this year's two swing voting blocs are single women - considered crucial for Democrats - and NASCAR dads like Prescott for Republicans.

Some experts disagree on just how much influence such voters will carry in the 2004 election, but other pollsters say both demographic groups are up for grabs and can make a big difference in battleground states such as Maine, New Hampshire and Ohio.

NASCAR Loves Dubya....

I think this cements NH, gives him the lead in Maine, and puts Mass. in play.

Why court nascar dads if most are going to vote for him?

Why isn't this considered pandering?

If Kerry can go windsurfing, mountain biking on thousand dollar mountain bikes and hanging out with RICH elites, why the hell can't "W" hang out with REDNECKS! We have to remember us "renecks" have relatives and kids that are pulling the fairest share of supporting the troups in IRAQ and not forgetting 9/11!!!!

KERRY doesn't dare show up at a NASCAR race., heck his daughters had a tough time at the MTV award show.

S'okay rednecks have children fighting in Iraq. So do a lot of other people. A lot of other people besides 'rednecks' haven't forgotten 9-11. What does that have to do with who Bush goes pandering to?

Good move. Bush had to do something to counter the steady infiltration of communists into South NH via the I-95 Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Gotta wonder how any girl who dresses like this in public was raised. Not the attire for family day at NASCAR, but for a kerry she is modest.

Why would this be pandering? NASCAR is a mainstream sport (not that I watch it but apparently many do, it's football season anyway) and these NASCAR guys are supposed to be regular guys.

I have a guy who lives four house down from me with a Kerry/Edwards sign hoisted high on his fence, and he has an RV that he takes to all these races.

Maybe at one time this was a redneck sport but it is too popular to be just rednecks watching it and it seems to be popular in places like Chicago and the mid-west. Thats fertile ground to change a union-NASCAR-dad to a Bush supporter.

Very interesting, that fertile ground argument.

You know, As a young senator, I was very instrumental in bringing the NASCAR racing...uh, er, r-races to the northeast. Why, I remember as a small lad as I was growing up, I would sneak off behind the servant's quarters with my little AM radio and listen to the races and dream of being a famous stock car racing... uh, r-racer person like Cale Jarrett or Richard Perry...

FIRST DID I SAY THAT OTHER'S BESIDE REDNECKS HAVE FAMILY FIGHTING IN IRAQ....NO I DIDN'T....but the MSM always knocks NASCAR Fans, just as you seem to be doing in your little round about comment.

as far your comment about pandering to: I take it better he pander to the Michael Moores of the world.

HAVE YOU BEEN TO A NASCAR RACE: PROBABLY NOT, WE "YES WE" SUPPORT PRESIDENT BUSH, TROOPS AND REMEMBER 9/11. IF HALF THE COUNTRY SHOWED THE LOVE AND RESPECT NASCAR FANS DO TO IT'S HEARTLAND, WE WOULDN'T HAVE ALL THIS DIVISION. How many times do you hear of a NASCAR driver, etc., up on rape, drug, charges. Sure there may be beer, and cursing, but the love of GOD, Country, runs a lot deeper.

THIS PANDERING CRAP COMMENTS IS TOTALLY IT OUT OF LINE.

AS I'D TRUST A NASCAR FAN BACKING ME UP IN BATTLE WAY BEFORE I WOULD A SENATOR FROM MASS or a Liberal web blogger.

I watch NASCAR on tv whenever I can. I have nothing against nascar at all. However, your SHOUTING and SCREAMING post about who is more patriotic and righteous in lifestyle says a lot about the sport's admirers.

The shouting and screaming thing was in regards to the capitalized letters. But if that's why you're doing it, well that's different and apologize for assuming based on that. God bless you as well.
