Speeches:
Congressman Hinojosa's remarks at San Juan Nuestra Clinica groundbreaking

April 7, 2004 – It is a pleasure to be here today. I would like to thank Mayor Laredo, Mr. Gonzalez, and of course, Lucy Ramirez and the board members present for allowing me to take part in this very special event.

Nuestra Clinica del Valle is a huge source of pride and admiration for me. Lucy Ramirez, along with the Nuestra board of directors, and the dedicated staff at all of the clinics know no limits when it comes to serving the health needs of the Rio Grande Valley.

By simply not accepting any funding or personnel shortage as a barrier to their mission, Nuestra Clinica del Valle has been able to provide services to more than 29,000 South Texans. That is almost 30,000 of our friends and neighbors who will live longer and healthier lives because of the people here before you today.

At a time when medical facilities throughout the nation are closing their doors or at least cutting services, Nuestra Clinica continues to grow and touch more lives.
The reason for this progress is that Lucy Ramirez knows how to facilitate local and federal partnerships. This groundbreaking for the new San Juan facility is the result of the coordination of funding from two federal agencies, land donated from the city, and assistance from my congressional office...all brought together by Ms. Ramirez. With her unique brand of diplomacy skills and fundraising ability, she could have a great career in politics! But, as you know, we really need her here at the helm of Nuestra Clinica.

I am sure that this San Juan facility will be at capacity from the day it opens and that Nuestra Clinica del Valle will continue to find ways to reach out to the indigent and others who have no other place to turn. It is an honor to witness your seemingly constant expansion, and to be able to help out where I can. I commend you all for your work and congratulate you for your success.

Thank you for having me. I look forward to returning for the ribbon-cutting of the San Juan Clinic.
