no to brazil and germany - maybe have japan and india get one half of a vote - france's vote, which will be removed from the security council. Because having france on the security council is a contradiction in terms.

Japan and India yes. Germany should be part of an EU seat with France and the UK dropping out. Brazil no.

Sure, put them all on. It increases the chances of a veto, preventing the UN from doing anything at all.

It's nothing but a glorified debating society now, and this will strip it of any meaningful power.

Yawnnnnn!

The UN has no support in the US and we are just waiting for a Politician to run on the platform of de-funding them!

As long as the Security Council holds the real power in the UN and the USA remains a permanent member with a veto, the rest is OK. We (USA) will never get a better deal in another international organization than the one we have right now with the UN. Regardless of the anti-American rhetoric in that place, the USA has a permanent veto and when the chips are down, can stop the UN in its tracks.

Great idea. As soon as we're out of the UN.

No room for the gutless.

In fact, we should replace France.

No to Germany and Brazil (One a backstabber on the war on terrorism, the other Communist under President Lula). Yes, probably, to India as a counter-balance to Islamofascist infested Pakistan.

And to Japan, Maybe. (First commit to a complete dismantling of non-tarrif trade barriers and collusive business practices that keep out American and other goods and services).

Pretty much agree. No Brazil, Germany can share with France. So possibly Japan, India

The four countries said that Africa "must also be represented in the permanent membership of the Security Council." African leaders are debating which country from the vast continent might get a Security Council seat if one is made available.

Uhm, WHICH African nation has international stature; is economically developed to the extent of providing its own basic needs; is not under sanctions or isn't engaged in on-going 'illegal' wars; and has had a stable government long enough to have a permanent seat???

South Africa in its present form hardly qualifies, though in 20 or so more years it might.

Morocco? Ethiopia? Algeria? Sudan? Chad? Angola?

People's Democratic Hell-Hole Republic of the Cannibalistic Army Congo?

Nigeria? Liberia? Berkina-Fasso? Malagasy Republic? Namibia? Uganda? Mozambique? Tanzania? Zimbabwe? Libya? Egypt? Mali?

Suggestions, anyone?

No to Germany. Yes to Japan and India. Brazil, still debatable. An African nation? Which one? South Africa seems the only real candidate, but the jury's still out on its stability

On the security Council? With automatic veto power?

When hell freezes over, maybe.

A seat for the European Union is a good idea. It is supported by the German conservative party (CDU) and the German liberal party (FDP).

I would only let Japan on there.

India has been singularly unsupportive of the U.S. despite its own problems with Islamic lunatics targettting Hindus and Sikhs there.

I think their leadership must still have Nehru in the blood.

I'm with the President on this one: support Japan.

First, it's yet another small and positive step towards Japan reasserting itself from a defense standpoint and, as a fairly solid US ally, an additional counterweight against the Chinese.

Speaking of whom, Peiking can't think much of Japan's interest in joining the Council.

Four countries that want permanent membership on an expanded U.N. Security Council - Brazil, Germany, India and Japan

Only one U.N. Security Council seat for the EU. France must give up it's seat. That means no to Germany

No to Brazil.

OK to India.

Yes to Japan.
