President Bush on Monday received the endorsement of New York's Conservative Party.
"With Bush having the momentum, closing the gap even here in New York, it's not impossible, never has been impossible, I never believed it was impossible, that he could ultimately take this state," state Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long said. "I think our endorsement helps put New York in play."
Such a move allowed Ronald Reagan to carry the state in 1980.
Two statewide independent polls released last week showed Democrat John Kerry's once hefty double-digit leads over Republican Bush in heavily Democratic New York had slipped into the single digits.
The Conservative Party backed Bush in 2000, but Vice President Al Gore easily carried New York. No Republican presidential candidate has carried the state, where there are five Democrats for every three Republicans, since Reagan did it in 1980 and 1984.
Unlike most states, New York allows major-party candidates to also count votes they receive from minor-party ballot lines, a factor that can be critical in a close race.
In 1980, the 256,131 votes Reagan collected on the Conservative Party line put him over the top in New York. The party's backing also was the difference in Republican George Pataki's win over Democratic incumbent Mario Cuomo in the 1994 governor's race.
"I think we can give him 300,000 to 500,000 votes and hopefully do what we did in 1980 and provide the margin of victory," Long said.
