Designated Rathergate fallgal Mary Mapes is still on the job at the network's formerly great news division, despite a deluge of leaks from CBS employees fingering her as the "60 Minutes" producer who dropped the ball in the forged memo story.
"CBS News staffers say they're puzzled why Mapes is still apparently actively working on the memos story," reports USA Today in Wednesday editions.
CBS News spokeswoman Sandy Genelius refused to comment on Mapes continuing work on the memos story, but acknowledged, however, that the "60 Minutes" producer remains on CBS's payroll. The fact that Mapes is still on the job has prompted speculation that she may not be willing to walk the plank - or at least not alone.
And since her key source for the disastrous story, Bill Burkett, was also a longtime source for Dan Rather himself, suspicion continues to swirl that Mapes may have the goods on CBS misconduct that transcends her own role in Rathergate.
The Rathergate fallgal, who's been searching for dirt on President Bush's National Guard record since 1999, has spent all that time working under Rather on "60 Minutes II." She's also been a top producer on the anchorman's "Evening News" broadcasts since 1989.
Yes, he did. Just amazing. "If they documents turn out to be fakes, I'd like to break that story." News flash, Dan. The story was broken shortly after you reported using the fake, but accurate memos.
How delusional IS this guy? We all slow down a bit as we get older, but there comes a time when you need to acknowledge it and stop embarrassing yourself in public.

The really scary thing about Dan is that he actually thinks he did break the story with his interview of Burkett.
Also, note what he says, "if the documents are not what we were led to believe". He still is holding out hope that the documents are real. Hey Dan, get ready to break some more news. The documents are fake!
Remember, Dan Rather is the boss and he believes both that the story behind the documents is true and, incredibly, that the documents are not forgeries - they just can't be validated. With this mentality at the top what else could you expect from CBS News?
No puzzlement here, either. I'm thinking that keeping Mapes in the loop is just Rather's way of saving face. Taking her off the beat would be thought of by Rather as a further admission of guilt/defeat, and I think he feels he's gone as far as he will on that score with his "apology".

The other issues expose HOW THE MEDIA WING OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY ACTUALLY WORKS! CBS' "gold standard" included:
1. The widow and son were IGNORED
2. Document experts were IGNORED
3. Hodges was MISLED
4. The old secretary was NOT INTERVIEWED until afterward
5. Staudt, who had his character attacked in one memo, was never contacted
6. The opinions of the experts were MISREPRESENTED
7. The swift boat veterans were MALIGNED
8. George Bush's roomate DURING HIS GUARD YEARS, who AGREED TO SPEAK TO THEM WAS TURNED DOWN BECAUSE HE WAS TOO "PRO BUSH"...
And the list goes on. Fact is, this was a HIT PIECE ON BUSH. And just because dnCBS owns up to fake documents does NOT CLEAR THEIR PROPAGANDA / DNC REPORTING!!

If CBS thinks more forgeries will trump trying to push the original forgeries on the American people, they're idiots. In fact, whatever they come up with now will look like mean spirited. They're in a hole, it's time to stop digging.
It's time for resignations, apologies, and a token conservative on staff. Only then will the healing process will begin...

She's still there because they want her to find other genuine evidence that the story is true. If she can pull it off then she will have trashed Bush successfully, proved that their original assertion that the docs were fake but the story was true was justifiable and aim the story back at Bush and away from CBS.
