Morford: Does God Hate Florida?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | Friday, October 1, 2004 | Mark Morford, hoping they get Orlando put back together in time for Gay Day

Posted on 10/01/2004 8:25:54 AM PDT by presidio9

You know it's true. You know if, say, San Francisco had just been blasted by not two, not three, but fully four lethal trailer-park-eating earthquakes, why, the Right-wing Bible set would be yelping with barely disguised joy.

Of course they would. They'd be jumping up and down and saying I told you so and pointing to Volume 18 of "Left Behind" and claiming that this was, of course, God's wrath upon the sinners and the gays and the heathens and sodomites and the tofu eaters and the Toyota Priuses and the yoga studios and the anal sex and the incense burners and the Zen meditation centers.

Ha ha snicker, they'd say. Serves you right, they'd sneer. Shoulda voted Republican, they'd add. And then they'd go make lime Jell-O and watch Raymond.

But of course, right now it's about 68 crisp n' flawless pre-fall degrees here in God's Fetish Dungeon, all gorgeous and progressive and non-ravaged, whereas along the Gulf Coast they just finished battening down the hatches and sandbagging the one millionth salmon-colored strip mall and anchoring Jeb Bush's ego in a vat of swamp water and evacuating nearly one million stunned and exhausted citizens for the fourth time, as hurricane Jeanne hammered down and shredded the state. Ironic, if it weren't so sad.

Which sort of makes you think, if I were a God-fearing right-wing BushCo fundamentalist and not, say, a neo-pagan Zen atheist Buddhist Taoist Zoroastrian Orgasmican who uses "Passion of the Christ" DVDs as Astroglide coasters, I might offer up the notion that maybe, just maybe Bush's neoconservative God is more than a mite peeved with the Neon Stucco Retirement State. You think?

Maybe He's more than a little perturbed at the current situation, and maybe I'd suggest

Funny: I recall very few dead Floridians. How many dead faggots are there in San Francisco?
</counter-Morford persona>
Whew! It's hard being that hateful!

>>He does, however, hate house trailers.<<

Ya know... because he is sooooo compassionate towards the poor and lower-middle class!

>>Does God hate Florida? No, but God apparently hates Harrodsburh (KY):

Look at his picture. Read about his attitude towards God and other Christians, and non-Christians. Read his admiration of wrestling, including his oddly defensive wording of it. Wildly unfair personal guess:

The author or that web site was raped or molested as a child, has never acknowledged it publicy, and is burning with hatred as a result of it, including a fascination with homosexuality.

I agree... the religious fringe is visible here in times of natural disaster... as if God is killing babies via the shifting of tetonic plates.

Dammit. I hate it when Morford actually is right. While I would certainly not respond with glee to ANOTHER SF earthquake, or have any of many other bad traits he ascribes to Christians, I do like watching Everybody Loves Raymond. While eating Jell-O. And it's gotta be lime.

WOW. Well, in my beliefs we will all stand before Jesus Christ when we die. This guy will be no exception. Guess I missed out on all that buddist self-absortion and gay anal sex.

I'm not saying ALL religious people are nutballs, I'm merely referring to the kooky apocalyptic fringe types

I will talk for the Christian right on this one if I may:

1) I believe in the end-times and apocalypse. If you take the time to read the bible cover to cover it may make more sense to understand why people believe in it.

2) The apocalypse is the beginning of a 1,000 year reign of Christ. Bible mentions earthly governments still existing so to me it will be a time of scientific enlightment as well as spiritual for mankind.

3) As a Christian, it is not up to me to decide who or what God judges. The bible says that humans have free will and reap what they sow. I think athiests and christians alike would agree on this point.

4) It is wrong to be gleeful of the death of anybody. Jesus tells us to "pray for our enemies". It doesn't mean we have no right to fight back and kill if needed, it means to pray that their hearts are changed so killing is not necessary in self-defense.

5) The gay debate - I have someone I know who is gay who works for me. He believes in God and Jesus Christ. I don't judge him for his behavior, I encourage him to pray to God. If that happens, then he'll change with the aid of God's spirit, not because I condemn.

Hope this puts it into perspective of at least how I interpret Christianity. Religion by and large is bad. Relationship with the Creator and Jesus Christ is good.

During your short tenure here in FR, you have done little else but insult and belittle the membership. Your veneer is very, very thin.

In real Buddhism, one must be very worried regarding the final accounting. According to that faith, if one fails to uphold a morally straight life, mindful of natural law, one might end up as the mud below the lotus roots for all eternity. Most Western "Buddhists" are nothing but. There is a reason why most of them follow very odd and obscure "sects" and have nothing to do with congregations grounded in tradition. There is no escape from the wages of sin, even the real Buddhists know this to be true.
