House GOP Seeks to Quash Draft Rumor

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans sought Tuesday to quash an undying Internet rumor that the government will reinstate a military draft after the election, hoping with a vote to kill legislation that would do it, and the rumor as well.

The specter of a wartime military draft like that of the Vietnam era has lingered around the presidential campaign for the past few weeks, fueled by an e-mail driven rumor mill and a campaign by Rock the Vote, a nonpartisan group that seeks to boost voting among young people.

The White House on Tuesday accused opponents of President Bush of trying to scare voters with false rumors.

Much of the Internet gossip circling the World Wide Web has suggested that Republicans, including the president, have a plan to surreptitiously bring back the draft in a second Bush term. Democrats say worries about it are spurring voter registration on college campuses and among people in their 20s in urban areas.

"Everywhere they go on the Internet, all they see is the draft, the draft, the draft," said Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash. "The Rock the Vote effort among kids in this country is afire and they (Republicans) know it. They're trying their best to tamp down this fire."

Draft legislation scheduled for debate Tuesday was introduced by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., a fierce critic of both the Iraq war and the Bush administration, who said even he would vote against his bill now. He accused Republicans of cynically trying to use the measure to escape election-season questions about the war.

"I would not advise anybody that's running for election as a Democrat to vote for this," said Rangel, who contended Republicans abused parliamentary standards to rush a vote to the floor without hearings or discussion. "It's a prostitution of the legislative process," he said.

Charlie Rangel is all of a sudden an expert on prostitution. What a slug...

"Everywhere they go on the Internet, all they see is the draft, the draft, the draft," said Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash.

And however could they have gotten the notion that a draft was imminent, BAGHDAD JIM???

Suddenly NOW you want to fight a "grave and gathering danger" without certain proof that the danger even exists. And you say BUSH lied to get us into an unneccesary conflict?

This rumor is not limited to the Internet. Its the stuff of columnists' speculation in the major newspapers of record, picked up by the wire services and re-printed by hundreds of smaller papers. The Des Moines Register's Rekha Basu (the fright wig) reports Tom Harkin is spreading this story. Howard Dean's syndicated column says its only a metter of time before the draft returns.

This is hysterical. They start the rumor .. hide the legislation and blame Bush .. when they're called on it, Rangel tells all those running for office - DO NOT VOTE FOR THIS BILL.

Geeeeee Rangel .. why would you not want people to vote for this garbage you started ..?? Because you know it's a political death sentence for any dem who supports it.

Rush was laughing hysterically over this today!

And .. I have to applaud my guy, Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who is head of the Armed Services Committee. Goooooooo Duncan!

dubya needs to go on the stump with THIS remark: "as president of the united states, i promise that i will NEVER allow the democrats to turn our army into a draft army." he needs to go on the OFFENSIVE and say we won't let the democrats bill to draft our young people involuntarily.

Let us know what the final is. Of course the dimwits will vote against it to prove they are the good guys and the rumors that it's all the Republicans' fault will still be believed.

It's on CSPAN right now...

Charlie wants hearings on something that isn't going to happen and is complaining that his bill is being brought to the floor. This is a total waste of time and taxpayer loot...

We need a draft if we are serious in winning the WOT. It is now 3 years after 9/11. 3 years after Pearl Harbor, Italy was defeated, we were on the border of Germany and Japan was being pushed back. And all these enemies had more than car bombs and box cutters. This isn't a 'different' war, we went at it the same old way - bomb, invade and occupy.

It was the draft that made that victory possible and to completely occupy and control the enemies and restart them toward democracy.
