Parliamentary row disolves into fistfight

A fistfight broke out between government and opposition MPs during a parliamentary debate in Venezuela.

Rival members traded punches as tempers frayed in a row over a controversial media bill, reports the BBC.

The incident forced a 10-minute suspension of proceedings in the National Assembly.

Venezuelan television showed images of the brawl which began after the bill was slipped into the agenda against the opposition's wishes.

It started when Nicolas Maduro, of President Hugo Chavez's Movement of the Fifth Republic, and Nicolas Sosa, of the opposition Movement for Socialism (MAS), started pushing and shoving each other.

Their colleagues managed to separate them but no sooner had order been restored when another scuffle broke out.

This time Mr Maduro accused another opposition member, Roger Rondon, of hitting him on the head with a folder.

Mr Maduro then ran after Mr Rondon and the two exchanged blows before other opposition members broke up the fight.

The violence erupted over draft legislation which Mr Chavez sees as a way of regulating the country's often stridently anti-government private media.

Opposition parties say it threatens freedom of speech and have nicknamed it the "gag law".

Remember the caning incident in the U.S. Congress in the 1800s? Ah, the good old days ...

And wasn't there a bench-clearing brawl in the Taiwanese legislature a few years back?

To my shame, I must admit that I would love to see some one knock the liquor out of Ted Kennedy. Oh to see Liz Dole pull out Hillary's hair or bloody Boxer's lip and make Fienstein choke on her dentures. My imagination can run endlessly when I think of all the delicious permutations available.

It makes me want to yell "fight, fight, fight" like kid on the playground.

The member doing the caning was a representative from South Carolina and the member caned was a Senator from Massachusetts.

At least the Senator from Massachusetts was in attendance.

I was going to ask if there were any members of the Massachusetts delegation that we could “nominate” for this award, but then I realized that the more pertinent question would be are there any members of the Massachusetts delegation that we wouldn’t want to nominate! :)

That's why I wanted Ditka to run in Illinois. I was looking forward to a brawl or two.

We still have ell, but I don't think anyone else has the courage to face him in a duel.

Yep, after CCW's one should next address the legalization and regulation of duels. Before pfooing - please consider: were it now a common practice, then, for example, certain Dan Rather would in all probability have exercised much greater control over the materials and coworkers' activities in his show. The same would apply to 99% of obnoxious behavior in general. If there is a generally recognized code of behavior and if a violation might mean having a duel on one's hands - people would start behaving.
