TACOMA, Wash. -- An oil spill stained Tacoma's Commencement Bay on Thursday, and state Department of Ecology investigators said they did not immediately know the source or extent.

Spill responders from the department the U.S. Coast Guard were sent to Dalco Passage, between the south end of Vashon Island and Tacoma's Point Defiance, after someone on a tug boat reported thick black oil about 1 a.m. in the water, Ecology spokeswoman Mary Ellen Voss said.

The initial report indicated the spill was about an acre in size, but television news footage from a helicopter showed an oily sheen spreading over a much larger area.

No... I don't think we have great undersea reserves of crude oil, if we do, it would be a surprise ;~D. My brother on the phone is supposing a ship may have pumped / flushed his bilge.... which they are supposed to do far out at sea. There is a soup of leaked oils and fuels in any bilge, and a mix might be why they can't tell what it is.

I've been watching some interesting dish washing detergent commercials lately, and I wondered, "If Dawn cuts grease the way they say they do, why don't they dump tons of it in the water to get rid of that oil? Plus, the workers would have really soft hands!"

There actually are detergents that they used in Prince William Sound. It doesn't make the oil disappear, however, it only makes it sink to the bottom.

My brother was in the Coast Guard and was up there during the Valdez spill, and he wonders why there aren't/weren't quick use of some nifty diaper thingies that you can throw on the water that soak up oil, but not water. Most areas around oil docks have thousands of the things, and there ought to have been a stock of them somewhere in Commencement Bay.

More than you probably wanted to know about using detergent. In a nutshell: detergent makes the oil molecules less adverse to mixing in with the water. It'll have the opposite affect of what you want in a spill: instead of containing it for removal the oil can spread out further.

Plus, the workers would have really soft hands!"

And if they get "the calming smell of lavender" there might be a little more love in the world :)
