MOSCOW — The intense U.S.-led assault on Fallujah could undermine Iraq's upcoming elections, the Russian Foreign Ministry warned Tuesday, and the United Nations' refugee agency expressed concern about the tens of thousands of civilians who have fled the besieged city. "We are ... concerned that the actions in this region not worsen the conditions in Iraq as a whole in the run-up to the possible elections there," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko told a news conference when asked for comment on the Fallujah offensive.
The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees also expressed concern about Fallujah's civilians, tens of thousands of whom are believed to have fled as U.S.-led forces battle insurgents. "The most immediate needs of the displaced are food, shelter, water and sanitation and health care," UNHCR spokeswoman Jennifer Clark said in Geneva.

Compare that to:
U.N. Envoy: Darfur Descending Into Anarchy reported by the AP on 11/05/2004:

The United Nations has called Darfur the world's worst humanitarian crisis, saying the conflict there has claimed 70,000 lives since March — mostly from disease and hunger — and now affects 2 million people, up from 1.8 million in September. U.N. diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, said questions have already been raised about the African Union force's ability to prevent attacks and the possible need for U.N. troops to be sent to Darfur as well. But Russia's U.N. Ambassador Andrey Denisov, when asked about the possibility of deploying non-AU troops, said "I don't see it." He called the 3,700-strong AU force already in Darfur "a good contingent" that needs logistical support and should get it.

The Russians are making the same argument against the US that the US made against them in Chechnya.

Pirate-

Your absolutely right. After all they did in Chechnya, they can make statements like this? Talk about the height of hypocracy.

As opposed to allowing the insergents to retain the city forever?

Interesting that even after Beslan the Russians have learned nothing...

Could be. Or it could be that they are simply throwing it back in our face. Can't figure out why we are siding with the Chechnyans in that war. Seems idiotic.

Touche. OTOH, wonder if the Russians left something behind that might surface in Fallujah.

The Russians did such a great job in Afghanistan and Chechnya, we should listen real close to any suggestions they may drool out of their pie holes.

Big difference.

In Chechnya, the Russians never trained a Chechnyan army to invade with them. Over 2000 G.I.'s in the Fallujah invasion are Iraqis.

This from the folks who leveled Grozny?

Oh, I forgot, the Russians weren't going to have an election in Chechnya. (Probably a good idea since the Islamocrazies were still in charge, but you see where I'm headed right?)

Their nuts of course. This is going to break the insurgents back. It won't end all the terrorist acts but it will drastically reduce them.

We have to understand that the Russians do not give a flick about Iraq anymore.

They are simply playing the old great power game by working against our interests worldwide. Putin = ex-KGB head.

The Iran nuclear problem is a case in point, and threatens to destroy us unless we take actions that cost us economic and political consequences that also can diminish our standing.

After all the Russians *pulverized* Grozny, and they know well what has to be done.
