new name for a new country, sounds very reasonable. It also breaks with the bloody communist/USSR past.

However, "reasonable" and "common sense" are in short supply in the former yougoslavian regions.

Just looked at some old maps, to see what the area now called FYROM was called in ancient times, and I see "Paeonia".

Present-day Greece encompasses most of the famous "Macedonia" or "Macedon" that was ruled by Philip and his more famous son, Alexander the Great.

"Thrace" or "Thracia" seems to have referred more to present-day Bulgaria, but that's a cooler name.
