Van Gogh murder could change law

The Netherlands parliament has asked the government to draft legislation compelling Dutch mosques to employ only imams who have studied Islamic religion in the Netherlands.

The proposal, supported by the government and the opposition, came after a debate in which Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's government was accused of underestimating Islamic terrorism and failing to protect a filmmaker killed by a suspected Muslim radical on November 2.

Theo van Gogh's killing has triggered a cycle of retaliatory attacks on Islamic buildings and Christian churches that shocked this traditionally peaceful and tolerant nation.

In a sometimes testy debate over the slaying, lawmakers pushed the government to shut down hate-mongering Web sites and broadcasters and to improve monitoring of foreign imams who come to preach at any of the Netherlands' 500 or so mosques.

A vote on the proposal for Dutch-educated imams was delayed. Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner said it may be discriminatory unless that rule is applied to all religions. If passed, it would come into force in 2008...

The battle is enjoined.

This would really crimp the Muslim movement in Europe if you only allowed locally trained dimwits to be in charge. Its the Saudi radicals who are pushing the movement in Europe. Here in Germany the other night...they featured an undercover camera in a mosque...and here was some Saudi cleric talking bad about the German government and how German policies were bad for Muslims. I kept thinking...if its really that bad...then go back to your country and enjoy Muslim freedom there.

We will need to face this ourselves. The authors of the First Amendment never contemplated an anti-American violent political movement wrapped in clerical dress.

Someday we may need to declare radical Islam exempt from First Amendment protection.

At least this shows that someone is at least concerned about radical Muslims (can one make the argument that there are other kinds?). This step, in itself, may not curtail violence and hatred, but it may lead to other steps towards controlling it.

You can make an argument that there are other kind...

The problem today is that islam has been taken over by the Wahabbite sect, which is akin of Aryan identity taking over Christinity... This has been fuelled by Saudi oil...

There are plenty of moderate islamic sects, like for instance the Sufi sects and even the Ismaili...

They are considered as apostate by the Wahabbis...

So, you're saying that a vocal, well financed, radical, minority of the muslim world is casting a bad light on the rest of the muslim world?

sounds kind of like the democratic party.

Naaaaw! Problems like Islamic-inspired assasinations need some drastic and practical legislation. Maybe a law that prohibits Christian girls from wearing a crusifix and moslem girls from wearing a scarf.

I do not believe foreigners in ANY country have a right to criticize the country they are living in, especially if they are subversive. Any country is foolish if they don't deport foreign subversives.

"It is an illusion to think you can have complete operational control over that group 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Remkes said.

Hence the Bush doctrine. Playing defense is a losing proposition because the terrorists have to succeed only once.
