Lakeville, Mass. -- They may be separated by no more than a liquor store counter, a yard fence or a narrow road strewn with the withered oak leaves of autumn. The constant images of George W. Bush and John Kerry on their television screens have been replaced by scenes of fighting in Fallujah and the death of Yasser Arafat.
But the rifts in this small Massachusetts town, almost two weeks after the presidential election, remain so deep and so persistent that friends and neighbors wonder whether they can ever be repaired.
"We have to unite, or else we're going to be destroyed," said Cameron Marzelli, a Kerry supporter, waiting to buy wine at Starr's County Market on Main Street. But it is hard, she admitted, to imagine reaching out even to the man behind the counter, her longtime neighbor, Doug, who voted for Bush.

What absolutely amazes me is how these hypocritical lefties can preach tolerance yet remain so hostile, hateful and, yes, even bigoted towards those who share a different political belief!
Well, wouldn't you be just as upset? After all..it is a religion to them. Abortion, homosexuality, environmentalism, etc
Yep, 'RATS need to learn to embrace and celebrate some real diversity. It's way past time to call them on their own words.
Here in Massachusetts, the hatred of the liberals for anyone or anything Christian or conservative is palpable and disgusting. These people are total hypocrites with their talk of "tolerance", "diversity" and "multiculturalism". Obviously those concepts only apply to anyone except conservative Christians.
While I agree with you(the divisions run deep),I'm going to lay the blame for this SQUARELY where it belongs! The LEFT-WING so-called Main Stream Media has been in the business of distributing mis-information for quite some time!!Too many people have placed their trust in these organizations and it will take some time to display their collective LEFT WING BIAS for all to see!!!!!
I live right next to Lakeville, and my town only voted for Kerry by 52 votes. there are two other towns bordering mine that also voted for Bush. We are pretty suburban here, and not the rural, Western Mass. stereotype one would expect to vote Republican.
I'm happy to report that 45 Massachusetts towns voted for Bush, and the vote was very close in many more. Bush did better in Massachusetts this time against a so-called "favorite son" than he did four years ago against Gore.
There's hope, beleive me.
American flags???..Support our troops??..How jingoistic/sarcasm.
"I want to understand, instead of pushing a point," she said. "I'd like to travel to places that make me nervous."
Yeah, those knuckledragging conservatives are pretty scary.
The only diversity they can't stand is the diversity of thought and beliefs.
I live in Berkshire County, and I can count on one hand those who I KNOW joined me in casting a vote for"W"on Nov.2nd!!!
You make a very strong point. The liberals' zone of comfort existed for 8 years of Clinton's vacation from responsibility. They started out his in '93 in control of everything and now they control nothing. Bush forces them to face our problems and admit that the liberal way is a failure and there is no turning back. This absolutely terrifies them. By the way I say that as a resident of Palm Beach County, FL and there are depressed and nasty liberals around here as far as the eye can see.
Well thank you very much. And as a resident of an urban county in Maryland, I see similar people.

Well, good heavens, what did you expect? Berkshire County is the Summer home of Civilization, after all. ;^)
Maybe it is time for some "missionaries" from red states to join you in Mass. for a litte work toward converting the misguided liberals of your state. I have a sweatshirt that says I am a charter member of the vast right wing conspiracy.
Of course, we still have some missionary work to complete here in Alabama. I have been preaching to a couple of our still Democrat officials that they had better wake up to the fact that their grassroots existence is what is helping to prop upnational leadership such as Kennedy, Hillary, Leahy, etc. People herre voted straight Repub this time about 2 to one.
