Former campaign aide: 'He stiffed me'
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 11/15/4 | Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross

Former San Francisco Supervisor Tony Hall spent thousands of dollars for thank-you dinners for his contributors -- but a woman who helped raise that money says the only thing she got was a fat headache, and now she's threatening to sue.

"He stiffed me -- I didn't get paid a dime,'' said Julie DeGregorio, who worked as Hall's fund-raiser earlier in the year as he was contemplating a re-election bid to the Board of Supervisors.

Even more embarrassing, DeGregorio says Hall was dialing for campaign dollars right out of his Board of Supervisors office.

How does she know this?

"Because I was there,'' DeGregorio said.

Hall -- who dropped out of the race after taking a $160,000-a-year mayoral appointment as head of the Treasure Island Authority -- called DeGregorio's charges "absolutely untrue.''

"Julie DeGregorio is a disgruntled fund-raiser who was trying to extort money from my campaign and trying to secure a contract,'' he said.

What we do know for certain is that Hall and DeGregorio hooked up for at least a trial run early in the year -- and working off a list DeGregorio furnished, the two did start making a series of fund-raising phone calls.

Hall said all their calls were made from his West of Twin Peaks home.

DeGregorio, however, said Hall had quickly tired of working from home, so they started meeting three or four times a week at his City Hall office.

"I said, 'Tony, we are not supposed to do this,' but he said he wanted to work out of the office, to be close to everything,'' DeGregorio said.

This is San Francisco, so you don't need to be told which party is involved.

Just a neighborhood -- don't think it means anything beyond that.

And God knows that men stiffing women in San Cramcrisco doesn't happen that often. Usually they're stiffing other men.

Which party?

Is there more than one party in Gayland, err, I mean San Francisco ?

"Former campaign aide: 'He stiffed me'"

A distinctly unpleasant experience considering that this was in San Francisco!

I know Tony Hall. I would be surprised if he made illegal calls from his office. He was a good, conservative supervisor for the west side of the city.
