CALLAO, Peru (AP)

The first public trial of Shining Path rebel leader Abimael Guzman fell apart on Monday as the second of the three judges presiding over the case stepped down citing a conflict of interest.

Typical of Latin America. Corruption is endemic.

Guzman is a truly sadistic killer and another good argument for the death penalty. Whatever Fujimori's flaws, he saved Peru from a Shining Path nightmare when he rounded up these murderers. I liked the way he handled the killer Guzman -- dressed him up in one of those classic black and white striped prison outfits and put him in a cage in public. Minor punishment for one so vicious.

I am shocked that Fujimori is being treated as a criminal. The Shining Path and Tupac Amaru are very violent groups. They need to be destroyed. MIR was another Communist group in Chile, which was destroyed by Augusto Pinochet.

I agree with you. It seems he will be protected by the Japanese. Whatever corruption he was involved with has to pale in comparison to his monumental achievment of claiming Peru back from the Shining Path, which is along the lines of the Khmer Rouge. Don't even get me started on Pinochet -- that man was an absolute hero -- but the Commies hold long grudges. And the sheeple are sheeple the world over. They soon forget what saved them.

South Korea had Park Chung-hee, who made the nation the Asian Tiger. He rid the nation of commies by torturing and crippling them.

I guess you could say the choice between staying alive, and staying on the bench could present a conflict of interest.

So can the choice between staying on the case, or receiving large amounts of unmarked cash.

Wonder which conflict this really was? Surely they weren't just members of the same country club.
