Rossi (r) Barely ahead - 19 votes

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- After a day of vote-counting with more suspenseful twists than an Alfred Hitchcock movie, Republican Dino Rossi held a 19-vote lead over Democrat Christine Gregoire on Tuesday night in the governor's race.

With the candidates so close, out of 2.8 million ballots cast, the winner will come down to the final day of counting. A statewide recount is looking more likely by the minute. Other than Rossi's miniscule lead, it was a good day for Gregoire.

Tuesday's drama began when Grays Harbor County officials started recounting all 28,000 of their ballots after discovering a glitch that mistakenly inflated Rossi's total. The recount was expected to give 500 more votes to Gregoire.

Then on Tuesday afternoon, Superior Court Judge Dean Lum ruled that King County should count provisional ballots that the Republican Party had challenged. The provisional ballots heavily favor Gregoire.

...ruled that King County should count provisional ballots that the Republican Party had challenged.

Any details on this? Was this a blanket count'em all whether valid or not, or just a ruling on some of the provisional ballots? Why were they challenged in the first place?

With a 19 vote lead and hand recounts coming, I think it's safe to consider this election stolen.

UPDATE: A friend who's been observing the King County ballot counting e-mails:

We wrapped up at King County's MBOS facility at about 9:00 pm, after a day of duplicating provisional ballots. I should mention that the King County Elections workers and supervisors have gone out of their way to accommodate the large number of Republican observers.

King County expects to tabulate around 1450 ballots tomorrow. Included in this number are the 600+ affidavit ballots, of which we can assume an overwhelming proportion will be for Gregoire. (However, a surprising number of provisional ballots have been straight Democrat, with the exception of the governor's race. In addition, many provisional voters failed to vote for governor. I do not expect that all 600+ ballots will be for Gregoire.) Of the remaining 800 or so ballots, our survey ran as follows:

Rossi: 127, or 36%
Gregoire: 190, or 54%
Other: 33, or 9%

Head to head, Rossi's share is 40% to Gregoire's 60%.

So of the remaining 1450 (?) ballots from King County, I speculate that Gregoire will capture 1000 votes, and Rossi will capture 300. I hope I am wrong.

can someone please answer me this...how is it valid to count some provisional ballots by offering a second chance to one particular area and not offer that same second chance to the entire electorate?

Kink county is totally leftist...and that's the provisionals that they choose to go after ....

I hope the Gop is on top of this and planning on challenging the entire election.....

I don't know. The problem is that not even tomorrow we are going to know how many new false votes will be added in King sCounty! The Dem-rats are waiting to make a calculation...

you math is wrong
36% of 1450 is about 550
60% of 1450 is 870.

Net 330 votes for Gregoire.

I knew it. It's not my own math wrong, it's wrong the math of my friend. I hope that we could win, in any case. Thanks.

Its not over. The totals will be so narrow, there will be a recount in the offing.

How the Sam Hell do they know that?

I think the odds are pretty strong that the Republican Party wouldn't have challenged provisional ballots that were for Rossi.

"How the Sam Hell do they know that?"

It's not so mush the provisional ballots, it's the "rejected" provisional ballots that the Judge ruled can be counted if corrected that is killing Rossi's chances. The Gregoire people have been working very hard since the weekend, going to the peoples homes and having them correct the ballot, sign it or whatever. The Rossi workers, however have been, I hate to say it, lazy over the last five days, knocking on very few doors, correcting very few ballots, hoping that the judge would rule in their favor.

This should help put some of those worried about King County at ease. A little. Maybe?

Right now Rossi, taking the trends in each county into consideration, is going to win by 600 despite leading by a mere 19. This is all mathematical projection, but take a look.

I've got an Excel spreadsheet designed by my brother that tracks all counted votes, results by county, and ballots outstanding to project the winner. It updates every 10 minutes.

Available at http://www.murdoconline.net/archives/001729.html

Save it, open it, allow automatic updating, and watch it in real time, including projections.
