N.M. Vote Count Completed; Results Won't Be Certified Until Tuesday
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | November 17, 2004 | Andy Lenderman And Rene Romo

It took two weeks— and it's still unofficial— but New Mexico's 33 counties have completed their vote-counting from the Nov. 2 election. President Bush is still the winner, although that won't be certified until the state canvass in another week.

Meanwhile, contrary to some popular impressions, New Mexico isn't bringing up the rear in the count. Ballots were still being tallied Tuesday in Ohio and Washington and recounts were under way in other states with close races. Colorado was still counting provisional ballots on Monday.

After two weeks of controversy, lawsuits and national scrutiny, New Mexico's vote counting ended with 86 ballots being found Tuesday in a locked bathroom in the Doña County Courthouse. The Doña Ana County Commission on Tuesday afternoon was the last of the 33 county canvassing boards in the state to certify its tally.

Mari Langford, the county election supervisor, said election workers were aware that ballots had been stored in the bathroom, but did not realize until the end of the canvass that the 86 ballots from one precinct had not yet been counted.

Lamb noted that the presidential contest wasn't the only close race on the New Mexico ballot this year. And she pointed out that some other states do not certify their final results until New Mexico does, or later.

Bush, who's had the advantage over Democrat John Kerry throughout the count in New Mexico, carried New Mexico with a margin of 6,047 votes, according to the tally Tuesday by the Associated Press. However, the president's lead narrowed throughout the county canvasses.

And in Doña Ana County, where Bush was the Election Day leader, Kerry edged out the president in the final count with 51 percent of the vote.

Ohio's provisionals are about 80% keepers... Thats a way different number of around 20%....

Though I think the provisionals are still way under the difference even if Kerry got all of them which he wont. I voted provisional, legally and voted for Bush.

Only 86 votes "found" in the locked bathroom? They're slipping. Last election, it was several hundred.

Anyone notice that all the states whose tallies were 'close' but went to Kerry, are NOT being counted and have already certified the outcome?

I'nm surprised they found anyone willing to count the ballots given the location they arrived from.

Poor Richardson. he couldn't deliver his own state. Prospects to be Hill's veep just diminished.

does any reporter ever think to ask how ballots end up in a bathroom, locked or not? has the journalism profession gotten that lame when it comes to digging out the facts?

I read that on another thread. Why's that, do you know?

Usually that high a number indicates somethings wrong with the system or it's Rat vote fraud, or both.

You repeat yourself. :) Yes ... both ... but DemonRAT vote fraud IS the problem with the system. THEY need to be put out of our misery.

I'm sure by the day's end we will have reclaimed our title. We don't have any ballots locked in bathrooms (that I know of), but we did have one county have to completely recount after they accidently ran one computer disk through twice. Changed the county from Rossi +200 to Gregoire +200.

My MIL lives in that county... I'll have to ask her how many times she voted when I see her next week. :-)

And Florida thanks you as well, New Mexico.

Wonder how many more Kerry votes Richardson found in the trunk of his car.

Unknown to most folks, we here in New Mexico use a Toe and Finger Calculator to count votes. It really messes us up when some election official has a toe or a finger missing.

I guess the Democrat's plan of flushing some Republican ballots down the toilet was foiled. /sarcasm

But seriously, why would anyone put a ballot box in a bathroom?

The Extra-'Rat-Ballots-in-the-Bathroom ploy worked again! (But bathroom not big enough).
