OTTAWA -- The Fox News Channel will soon be coming to Canadian digital TV.

The CRTC, Canada's broadcast regulator, announced Thursday that the right-wing, all-news channel can be carried by Canadian cable companies on digital.

The NFL Network also got the OK.

Canadians already have access to the main Fox network, but some critics objected to the open bias of the news channel.

The Canadian Cable Television Association had made a request to the CRTC to import Fox and the NFL Network for digital tiers.

The cable association argued that bringing the services to Canada would widen the choice available to Canadian viewers, increase the penetration of the digital tier and help combat the appeal of the satellite black market.

The NFL Network carries live sports, game previews, news conferences and other information shows about to the National Football League.

This is great news for us, the first thing I'm going to do when I get home is ask my satelite providers to subscribe to Fox News. I actually never thought that the CRTC would allow it.

You're too late. Fox is going the way of the other MSM -- tipping to the left. Though for Canada, it's still probably far right wing.

Fox News coming to Canada

By OLIVER MOORE
Globe and Mail Update

Canadians will soon have access to the "Fair and Balanced" broadcasts of Rupert Murdoch's Fox News.

In a decision released Thursday, the CRTC argued that "there is substantial demand in Canada for Fox News." It will be available to digital subscribers as early as next year.

Rejecting complaints about the station's "alleged ... ideological slant" the CRTC decided against imposing any extra conditions on Fox News.

The CRTC said that it had received 531 statements supporting Fox and only 82 opposed. But, to what extent the station's admittedly conservative views will be welcomed in Canada remains to be seen.

Critics say that, far from being as "Fair and Balanced" as their slogan declares, the station is essentially a house organ for the Bush White House. Pointing to statistics which show that many Fox viewers believe that Iraqis used weapons of mass destruction against invading U.S. forces, that the world backed the invasion and that Saddam Hussein was intimately connected to the terrorist attacks of September 2001, they argue that Fox is a source of misinformation more than news.

The station's commentators make no apologies for their views, arguing that they are a leavening influence in a media landscape dominated by "liberals" and other evils. Even Cable News Network, well to the right of most Canadian media, has been derided for not being hard line enough. Top Fox commentator Bill O'Reilly has dismissed The Globe and Mail as "a far-left newspaper."

Launched eight years ago by an adviser to several former Republican presidents of the United States, Fox News is built around high-profile commentators who have become media celebrities. It claims to have 80 million subscribers.

The Canadian Cable Telecommunications Association asked in April for permission to carry Fox News to Canadians with digital cable, satellite or wireless television service.

Besides the Internet and now Fox, how are the rest of the New Media in Canada? Is talk radio extensive over there?

In Canada, there's a lot of liberal garbage in the radio, we even have a CBC radio on it. I listen to only 2 stations, one with christian music and the other which has shows with conservative commentators on it.

I'm going to check that out when I go home. For bell satellite viewers they had Fox News spot reserved for months, I have the Star Choice version, when I do get it, I'll be unsubscribing channels like CNN. The next step is to have a Fox news Channel which is translated in French, I'm not sure if France has that because where I live(Quebec) a majority of people don't speak/understand English.

The 82 "opposed" is the entire readership of the Globe&Mail. Now that there is no hockey there is no reason to pick a newspaper.

" The next step is to have a Fox news Channel which is translated in French"

I don't know why, but the thought of O'Rielly ranting about boycotting France while a voice overdubs it in french strikes me as being hillarious. Hannity and Gibson would be a hoot also.
