Tensions between Israel and France are based on serious policy differences between the governments but there is much more personal animus to them than between Israel and most other members of the EU. A few years ago at a large dinner, France's ambassador to Britain was reported as having described Israel as "a shitty little country."

Just Damn. Right now is no time for Israel and France to go at it. The US doesn't have time to accept the French surrender. I am certain that if the tiff with Israel goes on much further, that France will have no choice but to surrender to the UN. Thinking that through, it isn't really a bad idea. Then the rotten stink ba$tards can move their intergalactic HQ to Paris, where the odor wouldn't be noticable, and Kofi can be close to his "man" Jacque. If you get the impression that I am somewhat against the UN, You may be correct.

Semper Biased

France has never hesitated to sell weapons to Israels open enemies, like Iraq.

Its also interesting that the French consider Gbago and co. enemies. They were supposed to be neutral parties when this intervention all began.

When Israel was founded in 1948, France was an ally. At some point in the 50's (I think) one day without warning they changed their mind and started backing the Arabs. They've never looked back...

The French sold weapons to the Israelis even before we did. For years their front line jet fighter was the Mirage III and the AMX-13 was a frontline tank.
The Israelis liked the Mirage so much that they pirated it and modfied it to produce the Neshr and Kfir.

They also liked the F-16 and tried pirate it as the basis for the Lavi, but General Dynamic threw a fit and the US forced 'em to back down.
Then they sold the Lavi plans to the PRC and it will be their next generation fighter...

I support the Israelis and dislike the French, but there ARE two sides to this story...

Which would be about the same time France also told the United States that it could no longer use French ports in the event of war with the Soviet Union...not even to evacuate dependents. I hope I'm alive to see the EyeFull Tower destroyed.

France helped Israel to build in the early 50s the Dimona nuclear reactor, then France dropped the support for some reasons thata re not totaly known.
Israel finished to build the reactor by itself in the middle of the 50s.

The major planes supplyer of the Israeli Air Force untill the Six Days War of 1967, was France, and the first advanced jet fighters of the IAF were the French Mirrages.
After the Six Days War, France dropped its support over Israel and started to love the arabs and never loocked back...Why? Only god knows.

Also since 1967 Israel had to develop its own tanks, and so the idea of the Merkava tank was developed.
In 2002 IDF introduced the new Merkava-4 tank, that by many military experts considered to be the most advanced in the world, especially in urban fighting.

So maybe it was even good that France stopped supporting Israel :)

I support the Israelis and dislike the French, but there ARE two sides to this story...

What are the two sides? Who needs a history lesson?

Right now, France is dedicated to undermining us in the mideast, is encouraging the Sunnis not to participate in elections, is deterring the UN from assisting us in Iraq, is overtly agitating Europe against allying with us and so on. They are our enemy. Israel is a consistent and reliable ally , with a courageous and steadfast leadership which is antogonistic to the same people that are out to destroy us. France wants to prop up and support the Iranians attempt to aquire nuclear weapons. They are whores and scoundrels. Israel wants to stop Iran.

So what are the 2 sides again?

New allegations that Israeli arms dealers helped the army of Ivory Coast attack a French military base look likely to reignite long-tense relations between Israel and France.

What goes around comes around - like stabbing an ally in the back.

France was so incensed by the deadly Nov.9 air attack on its troops it responded with overwhelming force, wiping out the entire Ivory Coast air force.

Oh, I see, the French can retaliate but never, never should the US or Israel retaliate.
