Whitewashing Whitewater (Clinton Mocks Impeachment, Ken Starr in New Library)
Washington Times ^

Posted on 11/18/2004 2:30:37 PM PST by GulliverSwift

LITTLE ROCK — In his new presidential library that opens today, Bill Clinton defiantly mocks the impeachment proceedings against him, charging that the independent counsel who investigated him had "a bias against the president" and blaming Republicans for engaging in the "politics of personal destruction."

The former president, in exhibits he approved, repeatedly castigates Newt Gingrich, accusing him of instructing Republicans to label Democrats as "sick," and asserts that the former House speaker led a cabal of radical right-wing "revolutionaries" bent on destroying Mr. Clinton for one reason: "Because we can."

"The impeachment battle was not about the Constitution or the rule of law, but was instead a quest for power that the president's opponents could not win at the ballot box," says one exhibit placard in a library alcove titled "The Fight for Power."

All of the text included in the exhibit was personally approved — and in some cases, even written or "tweaked" — by Mr. Clinton himself, said Bruce Lindsey.. Although Mr. Gingrich would not comment on the new exhibit, his spokesman did. "Why should anyone expect that a dishonest administration would produce an honest library?" Rick Tyler said. "It looks like we have the first 'I pity me' presidential library."

The alcove — one of 15 on the first floor of the William J. Clinton Presidential Center that recount the administration's achievements over eight years — covers a slew of scandals that engulfed the Clinton presidency, including Whitewater, an Arkansas land deal that went bad; the White House travel office firings; and the former president's sexual affair with ...Monica Lewinsky.

The exhibit includes several attacks against ..Kenneth W. Starr, who is labeled "a conservative activist who had never prosecuted a case and who had already shown a bias against the President."

"a conservative activist who had never prosecuted a case and who had already shown a bias against the President."

Can't he even have dignity in his presidential library? One shouldn't try to make overt politcal points in a historical museum. (I expect too much)

You know, Clinton's blathering is having an effect. I'm beginning to wish it hadn't been Starr investigating the bastard. ANYBODY else would be fighting back with the facts.

Wrong...had Clinton been convicted, Al Gore would have been elected easily in 2000 as a sitting president..and then look where we'd be today. Whcih just proves that GOD does exist, and that HE loves this blessed country, and that HE has a sense of humor to boot..

No matter how hard Starr tried to be impartial, the media rewarded him by bashing him.

Clinton was glad it was Starr, in fact, he and his cronies cheered when they were told. They apparently knew he wouldn't really go after him.

Starr is getting what I think he earned in disrespect. He
refused to see the evil or treat it as such. It's a pity.

Larry Sabato said on Fox News this morning that the National Archives will now control the Liebary, and can (and has, with other sites) change the exhibits at will.

We'll see if they inject some truth.

actually it's not..and we are very fortunate that Clinton was so determined to hang on..Had just ONE Dem had the balls to step up and call on Clinton to resign..Gore moves right in, and wins easily in 2000..

With Poland he just mispoke. He said there were not Soviet divisions in Poland, when of course there were. The media just blew up his mispeak.

Wait a sec..you mean the media mislead us? Perish the thought..( seriously, I see to recall he said that "Poland wasn't under the domination,.." or something like that?

I was slightly incorrect. Here is a description of what happened.

". During their second debate Ford got tangled up answering a question on the recent Helsinki Accords and found himself insisting that “there is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe,” adding, “I don’t believe that the Poles consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union.” According to Ford’s chief speechwriter, he had meant “the soul and spirit of the Polish nation,” as opposed to the physical Poland, dominated then by four Soviet divisions, but the President only made things worse by stubbornly talking of the “allegation of domination” before finally acknowledging the gaffe four days later. The best way to bury a gaffe, it seems, is to own up to it quickly."

One of the key lines in the article is: "We should resist the tendency of the American media to superimpose a narrative on every event they cover."
