No to the candidate, yes to the coat (Timberland to ask Kerry to pitch their coats?)
US News & World Report ^ | November 2004 | Washington Whispers by Paul Bedard

Bob Dole pitched Viagra. Al Gore grew a goofy goatee and taught college. So what's Sen. John Kerry to do to shake off his loosing White House bid? Well, the folks at L.L. Bean, Timberland, or Woolrich would probably love to have him pitching their coats. That's because Kerry's campaign fashion trademark, his wheat-colored Timberland barn coat, has caused a spike in sales of the jackets. "It does seem to be getting a big lift," says Woolrich marketing director Tim Joseph. Barn coat sales typically drop off when winter arrives, but not this year. "We are somewhat inclined to attribute it to the fact that there was a fashion push on this with Kerry," says Joseph. Kerry snagged his coat last winter at a Timberland factory store in New Hampshire, home of the firm. "With sales of barn coats skyrocketing," says his aide David Wade, still in campaign mode, "John Kerry has already created more jobs in New Hampshire than George Bush." Joseph thinks it's a trend that could last into 2008 even if a woman—say, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton—runs. "We do," he unashamedly hints, "have a women's version of the barn coat."

What irony! The barn coat is an expensive imitation of the $80, LL Bean field coat and the women's version of the Timberland barn coat, mentioned in the same breath as Hillary, is made in China.

I can’t believe that coat is being touted as some kind of Kerry trademark. W wore one in 2000 when he was in Crawford. He didn’t make a big deal of it, it was what you wore
I have worn those things in Texas for as long as I can remember, and I was born in 1947. We always called them range coats. They have been around forever.

The authentic ones are mostly made by Cardhart which makes a variety of clothing like over alls, pants, ect The best thing about them is the woven Indian blanket lining kind of like a saddle blanket. They are triple sewn, and held together with rivets. The coats are also water repellent, and heavy to wear. You will be dry, and you will be warm. They are worn by people who work outdoors in wet cold weather.

Some image consultant must of picked up on the fact W looked good in one when he was on his range, and of course tried to co-opt it for Ketchp.boy. I’m sure many of us in the west got a kick out of him wearing his with his $2500 cotton slacks with loafers.

The coat is made to be worn with jeans, boots, and probably with a cowboy hat, or maybe a stocking hat. I think I bought my last one about twenty years ago at Academy for about $50.00 bucks,

Kerry looked so out of place wearing on its no wonder they missed the boat.

They sell Carhartts locally at the Tractor & Supply farm store.
Have for ages.
They're great for mucking out dairy barns, clearing briar and stringing barb wire.

The coats are "function over form" and poseurs simply look foolish in them.

[kerry is so last century. he tried to be Bush Lite]....;))

This is all too rich. Just the thing for minor withdrawal from Kerry inspired belly laughs.

I nearly split a gut when I saw him on television wearing the infamous barn coat here in Iowa -- with about six inches of suit-jacket sticking out beneath it.

What a dink!

What, do they mean pitch their coats over the fence to the Capitol? If so, they better make sure that they aren't really his coats. And give him a t-shirt to throw over, too. T-shirts and coats, they're interchangable.

I like L.L. Bean because they are Republicans. I don't know much about Carhart, except I heard a strange rumor the other day that there is a new Carhart kilt for men. Have you heard about this? It's supposed to be a khaki kilt. Maybe Kerry should look into this fashion item.

I wear a kilt one day a year for the Robert Burns Dinner, but with the casual option?

Hi Investigateworld-

Couldn't tell you any details about these kilts, I just remembered the name of the company from one of the firearms bulletin boards I read. As a person not of Scottish heritage, they don't make sense to me.

A wee lesson on the Wearing 'o the kilt. Initially, it was like a toga, but a bit longer. Always made of wool, but over time it is seen as more of a "skirt", but one still see the "traditional" at Scottish festivals. Each clan (family) had there own particular weaving pattern, or "tartan".There fun to wear, except in cold weather. There's a couple of business men here in Oregon that wear them 7 days a week. (Both 6 Feet plus, 250) If one chooses to wear nothing underneath, it's called Military Style.
AND ladies, from 18 to 80 are known to manually inquire as to a gentleman's "style".
