Count 'em again, Sam (Seattle PI on Gov. recount)

Outside the usual blessings of family and friends, Dino Rossi and Christine Gregoire have less to be thankful for today than they may have hoped. Rossi came out on top in Wednesday's recount by 42 votes. It was a victory, but clearly too thin to dissuade Democrats from demanding -- and paying for -- a hand recount. The voters deserve the most decisive determination possible.

Considering all the irregularities associated with the election, 42 votes are not enough to settle this yet.

Democrats may well call not for a hand recount statewide, but only for select counties, those in which they suspect Gregoire would gain votes. While that's something they have the right to do, it wouldn't be the right thing to do. Were the recount in selected counties to change the outcome and give the win to Gregoire, state law requires a mandatory statewide recount anyway, which would drag the process on even longer.

It could be argued that it's in the state's interest to be absolutely sure that the vote tally is accurate and the Democratic Party may want to press a legal case that the margin is small enough to require a mandatory, state-funded hand recount.

But that is a legal battle for another day. For now, if there is to be a hand recount, it should be statewide and the Democrats should pay for it.

Whenever the race is resolved, one thing will be of paramount importance for this state and that is the recognition that once it's settled it's settled. The winner will be the legitimate governor of Washington state. It will be time to get over it and get on with it.

Somehow, I think that if it had gone the other way by 42 votes this editorial would be telling Republicans to move on and accept the people's will.

That's a joke, right?

Maybe they should call Mr. Gore and ask his opinion of the SCOTUS decision that stopped him from doing that exact thing.

That is, I believe, a ruling set by the highest court in the land.

A statistical impossibility, which I clearly remember from the Florida recount, but which the big brains at the PI have apparently forgotten, willfully or otherwise.

No it won't. The Washington state Democrats will try to delegitimize the Republican winner just like they did to Bush in 2000.

There's an AlGore Stench in Washington. The Republican
lawyers need to get their arses in gear and be ready to
scrutinize EVERY ballot in ALL the counties.

I just hope the Republican Party plays hardball with this Democrat vermin, and uses every means in the book to thwart these bastards at every turn. Unfortunately, I doubt that will happen. We'll just put our tail between our legs and let the "traitor" Democrat Party steal the election.

You know they would have. In fact, they would have said that after the original count.
