NABLUS, West Bank (AP) - Gunmen shot and killed a senior official from the mainstream Palestinian Fatah party Tuesday in the Balata refugee camp, party officials said.

Nasser Badawi, 37, was walking at the entrance to the camp in Nablus when three gunmen in a taxi opened fire on him, killing him, the officials said.

Badawi was one of the Fatah leaders in the camp.

There was no indication about who was responsible. The Israeli military said it had no troops in the area at the time of the shooting.

The Balata camp is ruled by competing armed factions of Palestinians, and infighting is not uncommon.

Palestinian student members of the Fatah movement, linked to late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, celebrate their student council election victory at Al-Najah University in the West Bank city of Nablus, Tuesday Nov. 30, 2004. The mainstream Fatah party won student elections at the West Bank's largest university Monday for the first time in eight years, and analysts said the result bodes well for party leader Mahmoud Abbas in the Palestinian presidential elections on Jan. 9. I believe this is actually the third strike in the soon to be major battle between Fatah and Hamas for control, in the long run, of Arafat's heritage/power and, in the short run, his cash. The noise from these two outfits pounding on one another will drown out the sound of the IDF agents who work for Reuters identtifying/locating key targets for the IDF. Reuters and the IDF will accelerate the fued and get a number of these fine fellows to their virgins expeditiously.

I'd rather live in a tent in the middle of the desert than live anywhere near the madmen in the west bank.
