"The Islamist world and its allies need to know there will be an unprecedented nuclear response to any attack on the United States with weapons of mass destruction. We don't need to be specific about which major cities and installations will be vaporized. ""

hhhmmmm....

If the US says that Syria or Iran will be nuked then it provides incentive for small-time enemies of Syria or Iran to launch a WMD attack against the US (anthrax, sarin, ricin or radiological bomb, all fairly available to smaller countries...) and then provide clear evidenc it was Syria or Iran.

Otherwise how does the US know for sure the origins of a WMD attack. There is no missile trail.

Terrorism is a cancer that can only be cured with a massive dose of radiation.

Guilty of aiding and abetting:
Saudi Arabia
Iran
Pakistan
Syria
Palestine
North Korea

Without the moral and material support of those nations, the terrorists would not get WMD.

Excellent. The engineering solution to this problem begins to creep in around the edges of the mainstream. Yes, we need to have this discussion.

The MSM could only dream of such a scenario: Bush fails to protect the US, and them kills millions overseas in "cowboy-like" retaliation, blah, blah, blah. And the images would immediately shift from dead Americans to dead people overseas, "Bush started WWIII" protests in Europe, blah, blah, blah.

Finally, someone besides me advocating pre-retaliation notification and massive use of nukes. It's about time. Maybe that'll persuade the muslim masses to *deter* the radicals and terrorists, internally. But if they're as collectively 6th century dumb as I suspect they are, it won't, sadly.

Put the names of all Islamic capital cities along with Mecca and Medina in a hat. If we are attacked we pull two out and those two cities are vaporized that day. If we are attacked again we pull out three cities, etc. This should have been the approach since 9/12. Who can possibly identify those so-called unidentifiable terrorists among us? The mullahs and strong men in those cities can. Who can exert pressure (Islamic terror type) on those terrorists and their families? The same mullahs and strongmen. This MAD logic would motivate them to do precisely that, potentially saving millions of Islamists and non-Islamists in the process. Deterrence works as long as the retaliatory response is real, guaranteed and overwhelming.

The level of fear in the back of my mind regarding a terrorist attack here in the US has diminished a bit since the election.

IMO, if there were an attack imminent it would have happened during or before the election.

That said, The inauguration is the next point in time that might be a target.

Something for the 'slams to consider is the the people's personal reponse to 'slams in the wake of a WMD attack. Certainly something that the government cannot predict, but definitely something that should be factored in and discussed just as openly as nuclear options.

SADLY,

AMEN.

SOCK IT TO EM.

I'd hate to wrestle with the fury resulting. But the death and fury from not doing anything would end up worse, imho.

Maybe we need to start with Teheran and Mecca.

Maybe Add Damascus.

An easy response in a PC world would be high altitude, high throw-weight nuclear burts. The primary effect would be EMP -- electromagnetic pulse -- halting the function of virtually all 20th and 21st century devices. Do it at night so the visible and psyops impact would be extraordinary.

The 'receiving' locations would be knocked back to the 1600s in terms of technology for a long time. Follow it up with a "sucks being you" message via leaflets.

No Al Jezeera tapes/broadcast, no Toyota SUVs to run around in, no ability to conduct banking or pump water, no loudspeakers on the mosques, and no functioning satellite phones, cameras or laptops for the foreign 'journalists' to report with. And no ability to manufacture modern weapons either -- factories wont run.

Follow up is easy. Just lob a couple more as needed to remove any modern convenience that pops up.

You get the added value of destroying the geostationary satellites that provide comms to the region as well, not that anything would be functioning to receive a signal anyway.

After a day or so the atmosphere would calm down, and our satellites could resume monitoring the affected region for ANY sign of electronic activity, because now the signal-to-noise ration would be MUCH better. The surviving emitters MUST have been hardened, so now they are are point targets. We get to play pin the JADAM on the donkey.

EMP -- IT's an amazing indirect fire weapon with long-lasting effects on 'civilization' ;-)

The targets should be chosen to inflict so much death and destruction that this evil ideology we face can never recover.

There can be no other response. I say that the targets are known to the US now and have been known for a long time. That is a list that must be made public information and reviewed and updated on a regular basis and then continually broadcast to the world. "We know who and where you are. You are still a target." If you have the cross hairs on your neck, you get out (and we'll find you there, too) or you assist anti terrorist agencies in capturing the terrorists in your area... whether it's a city, village, or whatever. No one will be in a position to call themselves an 'innocent victim'. THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!!!
