'THE PASSION' UNLEASHED Catholic bishops slam Gibson film

A group of American Catholic bishops meeting with Jewish rabbis have slammed Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ," saying the film was anti-Jewish.

In their joint report on the meeting, which brought together representatives from the National Council of Synagogues and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Gibson's fellow Catholics claimed the movie "was in reality a modern version of the notorious medieval Passion Plays which so often over the centuries have triggered riots against the Jews of Europe."

The report noted the film caused "deep and understandable concern within Jewish community world-wide."

Admitting the movie prompted none of the anti-Semitic events detractors had predicted, the report says, "In many places ['The Passion'] sparked discussions in which Catholics learned why Jews feared such dramatic depictions of the death of Jesus, and Jews learned that many Catholics today have taken to heart the teaching of the Second Vatican Council that the Jews collectively cannot be held responsible 'then or now' for Jesus' death."

The meeting between the Catholic and Jewish leaders occurred last month at the University of Balitmore.

Does anybody know anything about the UCCB? Probably some left-wing group.

Ping NYer,

The UCCB is the Bishops conference in the US. From what I understand, you are right.

Ok, I'm Roman Catholic and not the least bit anti-Semitic but if I recall correctly it was the Jews that wanted Christ crucified.

Pontius Pilate gave them a choice of who they wanted released, Jesus or Barabas. And they chose Barabas.

Call me cynical, but how can a movie depicting the crucifixion of Christ not depict the Jews in a less than favorable light?

The Catholic bishops, as a body, are so out of touch with reality but also totally self absorbed. What a sorry bunch of girlie men.

Huh.
Funny, they never made those comments when they reviewed the film when it was released. Political pressure maybe?

I will do what I usually do when American Bishops open their collective pie holes: politely ignore them.

There are times I'm tempted to convert to Roman Catholicism, but something like this always comes along to jog me back to my senses. Sitting through the vapid sermons in most Catholic churches does the same thing for me.

Matt and Tre have been obssesively paranoid about Mel and the Passion in their treatment of the subject in South Park.

In a related story, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has joined the Covenant of the Goddess, an international organization of cooperating, autonomous Wiccan congregations and solitary practitioners, to condemn the Bible for being anti-witch and anti-Satanist.

Except that this so=called statement was probably written by some low level functionary. I doubt that bishops even attended the meeting in Baltimore. There were plenty of priests and bishops urging Catholics to see the Passion last year. This article is pointless except as a vehicle to bash Catholics.

I remember that fairly positive review as well. Do we have the names of the bishops involved in this Baltimore meeting?

Why haven't you noticed, the streets of the world have been flooded with Jewish blood since the screening of "The Passion"...

I don't like to agree with others or myself, but you are so right.

There was a time I was thinking of becoming a monk (Cistersian or similar) but the church kept getting in the way.

Don't get me wrong, evangelical Catholics are up there with any True Believer, but the organization itself...hmmm.
