LONDON (AFP) - United Nations (news - web sites) Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites), under fire for his part in the controversial Iraqi oil-for-food programme, said in an interview with the Financial Times that he did not intend to resign.

"I think resignation is comparatively easy," Annan told the journalist who asked him if he considered resigning. "It is much more difficult to stay on and continue to do the job you are elected to do, and focus on the important agenda of the organisation and the membership."

Annan has been under mounting pressure in the United States over the UN's supervision of Iraqi oil sales under Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime, in particular concerning new revelations about payments to his son Kojo.

US Senator Norm Coleman, who is leading a congressional probe, called for Annan to step down and said he had evidence that Benon Sevan, the UN official who ran the now-defunct programme, had received payoffs from Saddam's regime.

There has been no indication that Annan profited but the UN chief admitted there was a "perception problem" after it emerged his son Kojo kept receiving payments until February from a Swiss firm working under the programme.

Asked: "How are you bearing up personally?" Annan replied: "Obviously it's difficult for me as Secretary General of the UN and as a father. But we need to continue with our work."

If a junior employee was caught stealing something from the till he would be sacked pronto. Do the crime, do the time as they say. The corruption in these ivory towers of delusion is staggering. I spent twelve months traveling around the beautiful apelike of Indonesia in 1998 and 1999. I saw very little presence of the UN where they might be needed.

The imbalances in the world system are really getting out of control. The stability of the universe is founded on truth and justice. People like Kofi Annan with his incredible hubris spin the world out of it's correct orbit even more. There is a breaking point. These greedy, myopic "leaders" of the world are going to reap what they sow in the not-too-distant future.

Neal Boortz has the right idea- kick them off US soil, plop them down in Haiti, and tell them, "when you get this straightened out, give us a call..."

Someday there will be truth and justice in the world. Until than watchmen need to hold leaders accountable. Let's hope and pray people like Clinton and Koffee are held up to a higher standard and if necessary forced by outcry and judgment to step down and if needful be prosecuted by law.

Kofi may well be trying to pull a Clinton. But let's not overlook the fact that Clinton essentially took down his entire party with him - He sold out the Democrat's soul.

The UN had even less of a soul to sell out to begin with, so Kofi's hanging on may well be a death sentence of the UN. It's got one foot in the grave already.
