Tonight George Noory is interviewing John Taylor Gatto, once NYC Teacher of the Year, turned author History of Education in America and Dumbing Us Down. John Taylor Gatto has also been labelled "homeschooling guru" by many American homeschooling groups and families.

He is booked the first several months in 2005 on a speaking tour of Europe. Also Mr. Gatto is often the premiere guest speaker at annual nationwide homeschooling conferences.

Legendary teacher and reformer John Taylor Gatto presented a scathing critique of our compulsory education system. He told how in 1991 when he won the award of New York's Teacher of the Year, he audaciously quit the profession, saying that he could no longer abide by the faulty structure.
Schools turn out "incomplete people" who become indoctrinated into the work force, he declared. Citing the educational focus on memorization and short answer tests, these "weapons of mass instruction," turn out a more docile population, that has not learned the skill of thinking comprehensively, said Gatto.
Over the years, he has become impressed with many home schooling efforts. Freed from the strictures of the institutional settings, these students often show much more progress in intellectual and character development, he said. He recommended the book Hard Times in Paradise by David and Micki Colfax for their insights into the home schooling process.
I was typing up a partial transcript of Noory's interview of Mr. Gatto when Free Republic crashed. I'll try to post it later today.

Although I didn't homeschool my daughter in the traditional sense - she attended one of the best school districts in the state. I did supplement her education over school breaks and the summer. We never let a summer go by without math and science enrichment activities.
We started with the local children's museum that sponsored a summer science learning camp where the kids sign up for a fee - ususally $25 - $45, depending on the activity and corresponded with a scientist while they conducted experiments/activities for the summer. At the end of the summer there was a party at the musem and their scientists were invited down to meet the kids and the parents. It was great while she was in primary and elementary school.
As she advanced on to jr. high and high school, we moved on to more advanced programs through home-schooling groups. While she would have liked to have spent more time at the mall with her friends, she really appreciated having a leg up on the competition for college. She aced her SAT scoring in the top 7 percent and she scored in the top 2 percent on her ACT. She took every Advanced Placement class she could take and took 5 Advanced Placement exams and received college credit for all 5, she was offered an $80,000 scholarship to Northwestern but decided on Texas A&M University and excelled - she made the Dean's list 6 out of 8 semesters while at A&M. As for the other 2 semesters, she attended Virginia Tech and University of Edigburgh and made the dean's lists at both places.
If you love your kids, don't leave their education solely to the government schools. Get involved every day. If you love your kids and grandkids get them out of public schools. These places get worse by the day.

This is what it is all about. We as parents need to do the best for our kids. Some can homeschool and some can supplement, but all can put in an effort!

One thing I remember him saying that he pitied the public schoolers who would find themselves competing with homeschoolers for the really good positions / jobs.
Also, what he called the best science job in America, head of the Human Genome Project, is held by a home schooled person.
Just boggling to flick on the AM dial at 4 o'clock in the morning and find this.

Well, at least it is a change from ghosts, holes to hell, monsters in the lake and forest, etc. Has he had a chance to get on with Bill Bennett.
