Actually, on December 8, 1941 President Hoover said in a letter to a friend that he knew that if this country kept sticking pins into rattlesnakes it was going to get bitten.
Our disagreements with Japan grew out of their treatment of Manchurian and China in general. We essentially went to war to protect China and earned the undying gratitude of the Chinese people, matched only by the French.
Regardless of moral issues, our posture with respect to Japan and Germany was extremely provocative and the U.S. Navy should have been better prepared for an attack.

Huh? I'm a guy. Sucks to have to say that too...
Well get picky then, confess all your male sins!;D
There are academics who have actually suggested, in print, that the 12/7/41 attack was brought on in part by long-simmering indignation over America's exclusionary immigration policy towards asians.
The Chinese people were grateful. It was the communists, who spent more time and effort getting ready to take over the country than fighting the Japanese, that are less than respectfully grateful.
Actually we denied the Japanese the oil to continue their war with China. We went to war with them because they killed my relatives at Pearl and Bataan. So, TAKE THAT TOJO! AND THAT!
The mistake we made in regards to Japan was that we didn't launch the pre emptive attack.
Then they could refer to us as "those sneaky bastards". As for Germany, after so much of their maritime harrassment it was time to do something about them too. Not to mention the fact that Germany declared war on the U.S. not the other way around.
And a cross-dresser to boot! :-)
In the Atlantic, the U.S. Navy was running convoy duty for the Canadians (more undying gratitude) and British as far as Iceland, where they were picked up by the British and offering arms to the British, not the acts of a neutral power. Hilter was ill-advised to bring the U.S. into the European War, but the clash may have seem inevitable. In the event, there was a short term gain for Germany in that U-Boats could operate in the Western Atlantic, preying on U.S. coastal shipping, at least temporarily.
It's what friends are for.
There were other reasons to war with Germany. Though it may not have been well known at the time. The holocaust was well under way. Germany was bombing our allies and was on the way to winning the war in Europe. By entering the war we certainly saved Great Britain, France and all of Europe. Sounds trite to say we saved their arses but it's true.
After the war in Europe we managed to give away eastern Europe but that's another story.
With Hitler in complete control of Europe there is no reason to think he would have stopped there. We would have been on his short list of countries to conquer.
The U.S. cannot be the policeman to the world but as the only super power, I think we have a responsibility to stop the growth of dictatorships where we can.
Hence a preemptive strike against Saadam didn't have to be justified by the presence of WMDs. Ther interest of humanity was served by deposing both him and his murderous sons and to the shame of all liberals it also will serve our economic interests in the long run to have a free Iraq.
On another note, I once read that Germany, at least in the first part of the war would give a warning notice to abandon ship before attacking non ships of war. I can't find a reference to it now. Do you know where I might find it?
Very off topic: "millard fillmore last of the whigs" was a great song by the obscure band "showcase showdown".
