UNITED NATIONS -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan won a standing ovation from the U.N. General Assembly, a rare public display of support in response to recent calls for his resignation from several U.S. lawmakers. U.S. deputy ambassador Patrick Kennedy joined fellow diplomats as they rose to their feet Wednesday, despite President Bush's refusal to support the U.N. chief pending the results of an investigation into alleged corruption in the U.N. oil-for-food program in Iraq.[snip]
"In 15 years I've spent at the United Nations, this is the second time that the General Assembly had a standing ovation for a leader," he said. The last time was in September 1998 when President Bill Clinton addressed the General Assembly "when he was a beleaguered president, under attack on the Monica Lewinsky case."

The standing ovation appeared to be well-choreographed.

Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., in a speech Wednesday backing a strong United Nations, said it was unfortunate that "some in the Republican party, in their zeal to discredit the United Nations, are wrongly calling for Kofi Annan to resign."
"With dignity and grace, he has skillfully balanced the diverse and often competing political interests of the international community, and he has ably led the United Nations with new vision into the 21st century, and he deserves the gratitude of all nations," Kennedy told the World Federation of United Nations Associations.

this after a vote of no confidence?
Clearly these people are enemies of the United States
The U.N.: a conflagration of idiots.

First Beelzebubba, now the thoroughly corrupt Annan.
Why are these moral lepers allowed inside our borders?
If Kofi is forced to leave it could mean a closer look at the UN in general. So, they must stand behind him.
This organization is corrupt from the top down and they are applauding their efforts and daring the world to challenge.
Keep your friends close...
AND YOUR ENEMIES CLOSER!
Of course, these hypocrites all made good money in kickbacks on this guy's work. Why wouldn't they give him a standing O.
This is window dressing for those not paying attention - hoping popularity contests will defeat common sense.
Let's stop talking about it and do it.
is the CIA bugging the UN building? I sure hope they are, that's why having the UN in NY is essential, listening in and gaining intelligence...
Of course they all clapped for him!...they are all in the pot together!...like a bunch of lawyers circling the wagons...
I feel much better about Kofi Annan now that a truly great moral leader and fine judge of character such as Ted Kennedy has weighed in on the issue.
("Teddy, I think I'm pregnant." "Don't worry, Marijo, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.")
To borrow a title from the late John Kennedy Toole's book, The U.N. is a A Confederacy of Dunces.
You're grouping was a little sloppy. Practice, practice, practice.
I got news for the U.N.: You can't polish a turd.
In the Post Cold War era this IS what the United Nations has become.
