Schoolgirl returns after suspension for toting what looked like alcoholic Jell-O shots

NEW ORLEANS A fourth-grade girl will be able to return to her suburban New Orleans school tomorrow after serving a nine-day suspension for bringing in what appeared to be Jell-O shots.

Neither police nor school officials will say whether the gelatin cups actually contained alcohol. The appearance they contained alcohol was enough to discipline her under school rules.

The girl's mother works at a French Quarter bar. She has insisted the Jell-O cups were non-alcoholic.

A school system spokesman says the girl told her principal that her mom told her to take the shots to school and sell them "to make some money for Christmas."

Our local news covered this tonight and said that the school was justified do to the appearance was not tested. What the heck is going on with these schools. OH yeah PC is the name of the game isn't.

What bothers me that she is suspended for it looking or appeared to look as though it alcohol, but, did not check it.

One of her requirements she must fill when she returns, drug testing .. now here is our great tax dollars at work eh?

Why is the default assumption that the jello was alcoholic? If the girl had a little packet of salt or sugar in her lunchbox, would they have suspended her because she had a white powder in her lunchbox that had the same appearance as cocaine, without any necessity to test it?

I think if her mom hires a first year law graduate that got his bar card from the bottom of a cracker jack box he can gett he mandatory drug testing clause thrown out.But it is a goverment school so they might retaliate by forcing her to go on riddlin and prozac until she is under control so that might not be a good idea

I would have her do it a second time, and then sue the school when they expel her. Raising the stakes is the only way to bring attention to the matter. Things must change, this is getting ridiculous.

Perhaps you recall the momentarily famous "lemon drop" episode that made the news a few years ago. It happened at my kids' school, and the media reporting of the incident was horribly inaccurate: "a kid was suspended for passing out lemon drops!" In truth, the kid had them in a prescription bottle, they looked like medicine, and he told kids they were medicine. He was not suspended: the principal sent him home for the rest of the afternoon (a couple of hours). But the mom (a real piece of work, like her kid) called the media with a wild story, and the rest is history.

For that reason, I never trust the veracity articles like this: reporters are prone to giving their slant to a story about which they very likely know nothing.

I think the key question is: what did the little girl say about the jello shots she was selling? Did she tell people that they were alcoholic?

If I were the principal, I might very well suspend a kid for doing that -- though 9 days does seem a bit much.

My friends, our public school system is sliding quickly down a well-greased slope. When a child can be suspended because some doofus thinks there may be the appearance of a problem, serious changes need to be made. Quickly.

Why aren't there calls for the heads of the administrative dweebs who suspended this innocent little girl?
