The war , like every war was not run perfectly...The media was kinder then..and we prevailed as Hitler had shot us his last best shot and lost. I received a war bond for my birthday present then..
It definitely wasn't run perfectly. It took Eisenhower forever to be convinced of the need to support a strong thrust, rather than a broad front... and then he went and put Montgomery in charge of the thrust. Montgomery was a great general if you needed to pin the enemy down somewhere (Catania, Caen), but to take land? No way. And then Market-Garden failed, predictably, and so the Bulge occurred.
Just ask the Nisei.
As it happened, I was home from school with the measles during the Battle of the Bulge (I was 13 at the time), and was able to follow the battle on a map, using radio and newspaper reports. It's sometimes difficult to remember that the news media actually supported the war effort back then. Sure a big contrast with the way the news media reported Vietnam while I was thre.
