Polls: Europe negative on Bush re-election
Boston Globe ^ | 12/13/04 | Will Lester

WASHINGTON -- President Bush's re-election was viewed negatively by a majority of people in several European countries -- including those in Britain, America's strongest ally in the war in Iraq, Associated Press polling found. The president was not the only one viewed unfavorably. Americans generally were seen in an unfavorable light by many in France, Germany and Spain, countries not supportive of U.S. Iraq policies.

As reflected by his re-election, a majority in the United States viewed Bush favorably. Just over half in this country said they were hopeful and were not disappointed after Bush's re-election.

At least seven in 10 in France, Germany and Spain said they have an unfavorable view of President Bush. Just over half of the French and Germans said they have an unfavorable view of Americans in general, and about half of Spaniards felt that way.

Especially inclined to have an unfavorable opinion of Bush in those countries were people between ages 18 and 24. A majority of all respondents in France, Germany and Spain said they were disappointed that Bush won a second four-year term, defeating Democrat John Kerry.

Just over half of the people in France, Germany and Spain had an unfavorable view of Americans, but a solid majority in Australia (69 percent), Britain (60 percent), Canada (80 percent) and Italy (56 percent) expressed a favorable opinion.

In Australia, seven in 10 surveyed had a favorable view of Americans; four in 10 had a positive impression of Bush. He got favorable reviews from more Australians than from those in any other country polled aside from the United States.

Randall Pearce, general manager of Ipsos Mackay Public Affairs, said Prime Minister John Howard's public backing of Bush appeared to help the president. A majority of Howard's supporters had a favorable view of Bush.

I could give a flying f*ck about what Europe thinks. I usually don't swear but I feel better already. We Americans are tired of outsiders looking down on our great country and our President.

More US citizens voted for Presidnet Bush than the total population of France.

More US citizens voted for Presidnet Bush than the total population of Spain.

More US citizens voted for Presidnet Bush than the over 75% of the total population of Germany.

Someone 'splain to me the relevancy of another Boston Globe article....

They seem to think that because they like American culture and watch American movies, they have a say on US politics...

I'm devastated! In ten years the Netherlands will have killed off the next generation and the Muslim will claim the land.
The Volvo will be re-named the Osama. Detonates on impact.
G.D. Powers will claim it to be the most reliable of self destructing vehicles.

These putrid elitist cowards always leave a mess for the U.S.
to clean up.

This is a good thing. F 'em. As usual, theUnited States of America is doing the heavy lifting. Americans are paying the price tag. Our unemployment rate is half of these countries. The EU economy is sinking faster than the Titanic. The flippin French don't work more than 35 hours a week because it's against the law. I'm 54 and work 60 hours a week. These Euro jokers should just turn over and let the Muslims apply some KY, and say good-night.

1) The reports I've read suggests that the mood in the UK is more unfavorable toward the EU than of the USA.

2) UK elections seem to indicate growing conservatism and acted as a favorable referendum on Iraq, USA, and Bush.

3) Would like to know the political affiliations of the respondants polled. Poll could have stacked the deck with commies/muslims/anti-war crowd.

I'm with you on that one. Since WWI we have been protecting that wothless continent and the bastards STILL hate our guts. If I were W, Step one: I would issue and Executive Order that all personnel be removed from the United Nations building. Step Two: I would issue an order to Secretary Runsfeld to get the Army Corps of Engineers to implode the United Nations building.

If there were screaming and hollering from these mindles dolts; to F'ing bad. I nor my staff would be NOT be allowed answer phones calls.

Then, we might see some cooperation from these foreign folks who are not siding with democracy. Maybe, then, they might decide to pull their own weight in keeping this planet free of terrorism.

These are naturally from the axis of appeasement. These are the people low enough to actually and shamelessly praise the terrorists and the chi-coms.

france is an enemy. They have been trying to backstab us at every turn. Having sided with EVERY DICTATOR IN HISTORY, chiraq now is trying to kiss up to red China and support it against both Taiwan and the US.

Depending upon the accuracy of the poll, your indignation is entirely justified. But at the risk of becoming the object of scorn myself, let's not forget that the Germans are at least an ally in the war on terror in Afghanistan. Getting the German army to deploy _anywhere_ in the world was a big effort, given the history of this country. Unfortunately that history also feeds into the growing anti-Americanism over here. There seems to be a lingering resentment that you gum-chewing, earthy Americans (African Americans too, no less) were largely responsible for defeating the Bundeswehr and saving the Germans' lily-white butts from fascism.
