Friend Killed On Dare After Bullet Pierces Protective Vest

POSTED: 4:06 pm EST December 15, 2004

OROFINO, Idaho -- A man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his friend through a protective vest on an apparent dare, police said.

Alexander Joseph Swandic, 20, died of a gunshot wound to the heart Monday after donning a protective vest and asking David John Hueth, 30, to shoot him, police said.

Hueth initially told police that Swandic's wound was self-inflicted, but later admitted to the shooting. The two had apparently tested the vest by propping it against a dirt bank and shooting it twice, police said.

Police said the vest was designed to protect against grenade fragments, not bullets.

Swandic was pronounced dead at a local hospital following the shooting.

Hueth faces a preliminary hearing on Dec. 27. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Here's a similar sad story. When I was a kid, another kid decided he was going to make a cool Halloween costume with a knife sticking out of his chest.

He got a board, held it against his chest, and drove the knife into the board. Too bad for him, it split the board and went into his heart. He staggered to a neighbor for help. She actually thought the kid was faking for a while. He died.

I wonder if your story is an urban legend. I rembember this story as well but it wasn't Halloween - it was two kids who made a movie and one of them put a board under his shirt while someone stabbed him. Board split and he died. Supposedly.

No, it was the vest's fault.

When I was 6 years old..I got a Superman costume for Halloween.....

I had a similar incident at the age of 5 except mine involved a Batman fantasy. I got the whole getup except for Bat gloves. Dad was in the Army and had scads of the black nylon socks which made passable Bat gloves (sans the cool pointy things that B-Man's gloves had. Anyway, standing on top of a 15 foot slide at the playground, at it was time.... for the Batpole!!! Ya know, ya just can't get a grip on metal with your hands sheathed in nylon. Woke up in the Bat-ER

How in the heck did we ever survive childhood?

I got my Superman costume for Christmas. I stood on the bed ready to jump off and fly and my older sister scornfully said, "You don't really think you can fly with that suit, do you?"

"Uh..no, 'course not." I said. Thus ended my fantasy.
