NEW YORK -- Newly elected Illinois Sen. Barack Obama made the cover of this week's Newsweek magazine for its "Who's Next" issue of people predicted to make news in 2005.
The magazine said it picked the Hyde Parker because he will make most short lists for vice president in 2008 and he has the "star power" to work with the GOP on bridging red state-blue state divisions.
Obama, in an interview, said he wants the party to reconnect to its moral tradition: "This shouldn't be hard to do. Martin Luther King did it. The abolitionists did it. Dorothy Day [of the Catholic Workers] did it. Most of the reform movements that have changed this country have been grounded in religious models. We don't have to start from scratch."
The task now, Obama says, is for Democrats to "reclaim and reassert in very explicit language that our best ideas rise out of communal values."
The story was written by senior editor Jonathan Alter, who has local roots. He's the son of former Water Reclamation District Commissioner Joanne Alter, a Democrat.
Can a person exist on hype alone?
I hope that all the hype about him drops dead in the water.
Another Obamasm.
Possible 2008 election lineup:
Jeb & Condi
vs.
Hitlery & Obama
Bush as man of the year on Time magazine. What is going on with that liberal rag?
How do you so that with a party that fanatically supports partial birth abortions, homosexual marriages and a total hatred for Christians...?
Is the caption, "In Bush's America, Hope is Born"?
Dan
hasn't jeb said about 10K times that he's not interested?
Someone needs to tell Barak that the abolitionists were not democrats.
Until the Republicans nominate someone else, I'm voicing my support for Jeb in '08.
I believe that right now he is firmly decided not to run, but I also believe that events can and will change his mind.
Wouldn't a candidate for VP have to do something or offer something to the party? Oh yeah, John Edwards....he brought so much to the ticket.
Just what America needs. Another charismatic socialist who talks about "communal values".
I swear there is something real creepy about Obama. I will predict that there will emerge some real big, bad, ugly scandal connected with him within the coming year.
He's just too much of a media darling--too canned--to be real and without some kind of history.
Gushing over a state senator who has not even been sworn in as a Senator yet shows the lack of depth in the Democratic Party.
Well, I'll just say it out loud. I wouldn't want another Bush in office for another generation or so. Nothing personal, really, I'm just naturally suspicious (even the appearance) of entrenched leadership.
Barak Obama...very self-promotional, very creepy guy, imho.
Obama: The Dems' answer to John McCain.
I think Dems want to nominate Obama as their VP in 2008. If they do, it will be like Edwards who only served 4 years of his term in Senate and spent the rest 2 years for campaigning. If they don't, however, and wait until 2012, there's a chance that Obama peaks too early...
In his book he freely admits that he used marijuana and cocaine. How can the MSM ignore that???? Oh that's right, he's a black Senator (even though his mother is white and his father abandoned him and his mother when he ((Obama)) was two years old).
