A Zamboni exploded Sunday night inside Peterson Arena in West Duluth, starting a fire at the ice rink at Wheeler Fields.
About 30 people -- two broomball teams and a handful of fans -- were inside the building at the time of the explosion. One player was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries was not known.
A small blast at 9:40 p.m. was followed by a larger explosion, which knocked the doors off the boards surrounding the ice surface onto the ice.
Spectator Cade Ledingham, who was in the arena and witnessed the explosion, estimated that four players were thrown from the ice by the blast.

Wow! Aren't Zambonis usually powered by propane? That's what I understood. There must have been a leak near the tank, which caught fire and overheated the tank. That's the only explanation I can think of.
Sounds like time to inspect all those Zambonis out there.

The reckless and irresponsible Zamboni driver pushed the Zomboni past the recommended top speed of 2.5 MPH, to impress his new girlfriend, causing the Zomboni to promptly over heat and explode. Injuries were not serious but unfortunately even though the girlfriend was impress, the driver will be unable to reap the rewards...

The Zamboni's use propane because it is clean burning, Many fork lifts use it also. It does have the drawback of being explosive.

"BLEVE anyone?"
That's what it sounds like to me. An initial small explosion from a leak, followed by a fire that heated the tank past it's pressure capaciy. Catastrophic failure of the tank, followed by a fuel-air explosion. Bad news.
I'll bet it was a crack in the connection of the regulator to the tank.

It's a hockey-like game played with brooms. Fun.

Southerner's Question: What the heck is broomball? Broomball is hockey with a soccer ball and brooms instead of a puck and hockey sticks. Usually played as a one time demonstration sport such as High School students vs. their faculty.

You forgot to add that all participants are wearing tennis shoes, which means that at any one time, more than 50% of them are landing on their butts on the ice!
