Penn admits to arrest
December 27, 2004

OSCAR-winning actor Sean Penn was arrested for attempted murder before escaping from his jail cell and fleeing to Hong Kong, it was reported yesterday.

Jailbird ... Penn escaped prison.
Jailbird ... Penn escaped prison.
The star, with help from his personal assistant, dangled a photographer from a 9th-floor hotel balcony in Macau after catching him in his room in 1986 while he was filming Shanghai Surprise, according to The Sunday Morning Post in Hong Kong.

The incident is revealed in interviews Penn gave to the author of his biography, Sean Penn: His Life and Times, according to the newspaper.

Penn, then aged 25, was in Macau with then-wife Madonna, tailed by the world's media, filming Shanghai Surprise, now widely seen as one of Hollywood's worst ever films.

Penn recalled how an intruder "lunged at him" in his hotel so he "grabbed the guy, ran him through the room to the balcony and hung him over - on the ninth floor."

Police were called, according to the newspaper, and Penn said: "Five minutes later I'm in jail, on a stone floor next to my friend, and everyone's talking Portuguese."

However, Penn noticed the cell door was ajar and fled with his assistant before jumping on a jetfoil boat and escaping to Hong Kong.

Penn, now 44, was later given a pardon by the Portuguese Government, which ruled Macau until 1999.

The incident took place a year after Madonna and Penn married in August 1985. They divorced four years later.

His arrest in Macau was never reported, although the couple also had run-ins with photographers in London and Hong Kong while on location for the movie.

At the time, filming in Macau was abandoned with no explanation and the film's executive producer, ex-Beatle George Harrison, jetted out to defuse tensions between Penn and photographers.

I watched "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" tonite. I'me still convinced that Sean Penn did the best performance of his life in that movie.

Spicolli rules.

Spicolli ought to get the death penalty for that movie alone.

"Sean Penn: His Life and Times"
I'm impressed. That ought to rank up there with the Iliad and the Odyssey

I didn't even realise that was Penn!

He is a brilliant actor and director but I would say he should certainly have been arrested for Shanghai Surprise, regardless of the attempted murder rap.

My old man had a bit part in the forgettable Penn-directed movie 'Indian Runner'.

He ran a beer-joint in the Nebraska town where it was filmed, and after filling Sean Penn and Dennis Hopper up with suds, and providing them with loads of bar paraphanelia for their set, they decided to give him a role.

He appeared briefly in just a couple of scenes, but to my disappointment, the one line they gave him got dubbed over in production. It wasn't his voice in the final product.

It's a bad movie, I hate sitting through it, but every once in awhile I do anyway, just to see my Dad, who has been gone for about six years now.

Nice story. Vaguely remember the film and I agree it wasn't one of Penn's best

I liked him in that Woody Allen movie.

That sure seems believable. To be fair, I'm sure Penn remembered it that way after the LSD wore off.

Yeah, now that I think about it, Charles Bronson and Viggo Mortensen were part of the cast, and part of that drinking crowd too.

Sandy Dennis was in it too, but I don't remember the old man mentioning her.

Give this jackass a few beers and he'll probably "admit" that he banged Christie Brinkley Heather Thomas in the '80s, too.

I met Charles Bronson when they made that. I was roofing at the time and had to stop while they were shooting a scene coming out of a church, I think it was a funeral. My family is in Syracuse.

...so he "grabbed the guy, ran him through the room to the balcony and hung him over - on the ninth floor."

The guy must have been 4' 3", 99 lbs. for Penn to have been able to do this.
