He’s a Preacher! He’s From Hope! (Gov. Huckabee, Free Republic W2 Inaugural Ball article)
Washingtonian Online - Capital Comment ^ | January 2005 | SUZI PARKER

Posted on 01/02/2005 7:02:42 PM PST by tgslTakoma

Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee likes to rock. And he’s bringing his bass guitar to Washington, plus some strong political ambitions.

Huckabee’s eight-member group, Capitol Offense, is the only band with a sitting governor as leader. It will play at an inaugural ball hosted by the Web site Free Republic. In 2001, the band played for a party at George W. Bush’s first inauguration. Last summer, they jammed at a Republican National Convention party.

“We play the tunes baby boomers danced to during high school and college,” says Huckabee, 49. “We try to bring back good memories and make new ones.”

They’ve opened for Dionne Warwick, Percy Sledge, and Charlie Daniels. One of Huckabee’s favorite moments: hanging out backstage with guitarist Richie Sambora in Nashville.

Huckabee will be strumming and networking in Washington—the GOP governor is eyeing a 2008 run for president. Does he stand a chance? Note this: He’s originally from Hope—yes, the same place as Bill Clinton—and he has spent his political career studying Clinton’s folksy style. While Clinton blew on a sax, Huckabee plays guitar.

In the last year, Huckabee lost about 110 pounds. Healthy living landed him a book deal with Time Warner.

Huckabee’s political ace in the hole? He’s a Southern Baptist preacher.

Plus, he's actually a non-Austrian, native born citizen.

Isn't that a refreshing change of pace?

Looks like they weren't too quick picking up on who Huckabee played for in 2001.

Does he stand a chance? ...not to be negative, but Newt said in a C-Span interview tonight, taped in mid-December, that he expects Dick Cheney to be the 'pub nominee in '08 - should be interesting....

Please remember your old FReeper FRiends sitting in the fog hearing about your wild parties and great times in DC.

Perhaps all of us Left Behind Freepers should have our own party.

We won't fergetcha!

Gov Huckabee sent a message to Free Republic two days after the Ball in 2001:

Our band had the time of our lives with you at the Inaugural Ball. From all I can hear, the Freep Ball was THE real deal where people had fun, while most reports of the other balls were of long lines, crowded settings, and music for old people.

We have been blown away by the kind comments about the band from those who attended--we usually have to play behind chicken wire to keep from being hit by flying bottles and chairs! You guys were the VERY BEST crowd we've EVER played to! People were more than nice--they were simply awesome!

It was a great honor for us to be with you and experience the energy of that room--enough to make a liberal squeal like a pig!

Thanks! You guys are more fun than is probably legal in most states!

Gratefully,

Mike Huckabee, Governor

Add insomnia, and agnosticism to your dyslexia, and you'd be sitting up at night wondering "Is there a doG?"...

He has my vote as long as he picks JimRob for VP, and selects his cabinet from the ranks of Free Republic.

Now wouldn't THAT be something?

Ne Zot! I had no idea it was THE Governor Huckabee! Make sure you book him for the J.C. Watts Inauguration in 2008 (unless he's Vice President or something ...)

Now that song is downright awesome!

I had never seen him perform that, what irony.

Now I know where you got the lyrics for your rendition of I Love FR that you have posted in the past.

We have to get him to sing it that way.
